Abstract

The Silk Road is the channel of economic and cultural exchange between China and western countries. In 1877, the German geographer Richthofen called the road as the Silk Road in 114 BC to 127 AD，which was published in the first volume of his book " China " , and the silk trade was the medium of the western region traffic route that time[费迪南·冯·李希霍芬, (Richthofen Ferdinand von) ,《中国--亲身旅行的成果和以之为根据的研究》, 1877年第一卷]. Later, in 1910，German historian Herrmann made the assertion that the Silk Road should be extended to the western end of the Silk Road to the Mediterranean coast and Anatolia in his famous book "Ancient Silk Road between Chinese and Syria "[赫尔曼（Albert Herrmann）,《中国与叙利亚之间的古代丝绸之路》,  Berlin，1910年]. Hermann's view was immediately supported by some western Chinese scientists and gradually accepted by the academic community. In 2012, James A. Millward summed up his own definition of the Silk Road in his writings that the term of the Silk Road does not only refer to centuries of silk trade between China and Rome, but also refers to the exchange of various goods and ideas integrated between Africa and Eurasia through trade, diplomacy, war, migration and ultrasound. Sometimes it's intentional, and sometimes it's a bonus, it started in the Neolithic period and continues into the modern era[米华健 (James A. Millward)，《The Silk Road: A Very Short Introduction》，牛津大学出版社，2013年].This paper gives simple statement of the cultural exchange of different periods on the Silk Road and the influence on the development of Chinese and western culture of the Silk Road, which is to show how commercial trade and cultural exchanges between east and west were contacted frequently, further highlighting the profound impact on the entire Chinese civilization and even the development of world civilization of the Silk Road.
