Abstract

The cultural value of the European countries and the US is a key integral part of current mainstream cultural consciousness of the world. In terms of USA, individualism is praised highly and people are always seeking for liberty, equality and democracy. Movies, as an important form of cultural representation, contain a variety of elements on humanism, politics and economy. American movies are profoundly influenced by American culture, so that individual heroism is much embodied in them. Unquestionably, American movies are glary in the arts of movie all over the world. And among the branches, the science fiction movies are of great importance. They are categorized into soft science fiction movies and hard science fiction movies according to the influence of scientific theories on the plot. The former emphasizes the supernatural power of protagonists, while the latter is on a firm foundation of subjects like physics, with the exploration and interpretation of nature and humanity. Despite the differences, the two types of science fiction movies have the common core values which are demonstrated through justice-maintaining, human-rescuing, sacrifice-based individualism and heroism.  By studying the heroism in American science fiction films, a profound understanding of the American cultural value can be obtained indirectly.
