Abstract

Toni Morrison, the first black American Nobel Prize winner in American literature, has had a profound influence in the literary world. So far Morrison has published nine novels. In her novel Love, published in 2003, Morrison continues to pay attention to the black women under the patriarchy. 

This thesis studies the three female characters in patriarchal society in Toni Morrison’s Love, which mainly consist of three parts. Section 1 is the introduction part of the thesis. Section 2 is the main part of this thesis, which analyzes the heroines living in patriarchal society in Love. In particular, Section 2 has analyzed these three characters in view of three aspects, namely, their economic disadvantage in patriarchal society; the facts that they are deprived of proper education in patriarchal society; and the trauma they suffered in patriarchal society. The last section is the conclusion part. 

Through this thesis, readers can easily understand the life of the women suffering in patriarchal society in Toni Morrison’s Love.
