从异化的角度看《红楼梦》的人名翻译

Abstract

    There are lots of characters in A Dream in Red Mansions, and its author Cao Xueqin makes great efforts in character construction, especially in personal names. Personal names in this book are extremely miracle and excellent with profound connotation. Name culture in A Dream in Red Mansions is significant. Therefore,  translation of personal names in A Dream in Red Mansions has significance in comprehending the whole work. Translation cannot be rational without culture. Foreignization stress the importance of culture in translation. This paper analyzes personal names’ English translation in A Dream in Red Mansions translated by David Hawkes from perspective of foreignization, it explores strategies of Chinese- English translation to better translation with purpose of understanding the original text. At the same time, it also sums up strategies for translating personal names in literature works.
