Abstract

Approaches to cultures involved in translation may be divided into two methods: SL culture-oriented and TL culture-oriented. This classification is based on an analysis of translations of the figurative use of language in the two English versions of the Chinese classical novel “Hong lou Meng”. The analysis leads to the conclusion that both methods may be justified in their own right if we take into consideration the differences in the purpose of translation, the type of texts, the intention of the author and the readership.

Introduction 

Found and to make a comprehensive analysis of the various factors involved in the translation, the translators can adopt the principle of "domestication" and method, also can use the principle of "alienation" and methods. As to what must be retained in the translation of the source language culture, how to retain, what factors of the source language culture and adjustments must be made to adapt to the target language culture, can be on the intention of the author, the translation purpose, text types and reader object based on the analysis of the factors, such as to make a choice. Is important for the translator in the translation process should have profound cultural consciousness, which realized the similarities and differences between the two cultures. In addition, the translator once decided to follow a basic principle, the translation should be as much as possible to keep the basic tendency. 

It must be pointed out two points. One is whether contemporary or in history, with purpose language into a home to return to the principle seems to be the upper hand. This is because the critics and publishers tend to pay more attention to the readability of the translation, general readers enjoy smooth and easy to understand the translation, and, this trend also coincided with consistent trend in the development of translation study. Therefore, Goethe so even said: "if you want to affect the masses, simple translation are often their best." (Lefevere1992:116), the second is with two cultures contact becoming more frequent, with the source language into a home to return to the principles will be increasingly likely to widely use, may eventually prevail. But no matter how to develop, "domestication" and "dissimilation" will always coexist at the same time, a deficiency will not be translated. Therefore, we believe that there is no need to be "domestication" and "alienation" and compete, like there is no need to "literal translation" and "free translation" battle.
