Abstract

With the development of modern linguistics, metaphor, as a way of our thinking and expression exists everywhere in our daily life. Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device, but also a model of thought and effective tool for human beings to recognize new things. As we all know, English and Chinese are two languages with a long history, so there are a large number of animal words in the two languages. And most of the time these animal words are endowed with certain metaphorical meanings besides literal meanings themselves, which has greatly enriched cultural implication of Chinese and English language. Animals are closely related to people’s lives.Regardless of from ancient times to modern times, animals have always been playing different kinds of roles.Animal words are widely used both in English and in Chinese to express the feelings of people.The paper has done research on the cognitive meaning of metaphor from the angle of cognitive thinking. It includes noun metaphors, adjective metaphors, verb metaphors. The purpose of the study is to explore the cognitive meaning of the metaphor of animal words in the actual context. It aims to discuss the understanding of the metaphor of animal words in order to improve the research perspectives of English language and culture further.
