Abstract: Super absorbent polymer (SAP) is a new kind of functional polymer material with many advantageous properties and wide applications. Because of its distinctive water absorbing and water retention performance, SAPs have been widely used in personal hygiene, agriculture, horticulture, medicine, food handling, forestry, etc. In this paper, a novel protein-based SAP was synthesized by graft coplolymerization of cottonseed protein(CP) and acrylic acid(AA) and its swelling properties were investigated as well. This SAP was synthesized by solution based copolymerization, using acrylic acid, sodium hydroxide and cottonseed protein as raw material, N,N-Methylene bisacrylamide (NMBA) as cross-linking agent, potassium persulphate and sodium sulfite as the initiator. The optimum reaction condition was obtained by orthogonal experiments design: temperature=70℃,CP:AA=4.5:100, NMBA:AA=0.05:100,initiator:AA=0.8:100, degree of neutralization of AA=80%. Under this condition, the swelling ratio of SAP resin in demonized water reached 842.9g/g.The effects of the certain variables of the graft copolymerization (i.e. the ratio of cottonseed protein to AA, reaction temperature, amount of cross-linker and initiator, the degree of neutralization of AA)on the swelling capacity of SAP were measured.
