On the Forming Factors of Nancy’s Characters in Oliver Twist

Abstract

In Oliver，Nancy’s personality is contradictory. She is a partner of Fagin and Sikes，she helps them do evils and catch Oliver to them, but Nancy also is an angel for Oliver, she not only helps Oliver solve one difficulty after another, and also protects them from being killed by Fagin and Sikes. We study what causes her character, it’s easy to see that Nancy is very kind, but she can’t keep her kind and pure at that time due to the social environment and the people around her, otherwise she will lost her life. She was not as cruel and selfness as Fagin with Sikes. At some points，though she was kind, she also was a thief ,so she could not get rid of this identity; On the other hand, she really sympathize with Oliver and think of him ar her brother. Although she help Fagin to kidnap Oliver back to the den of thieves, while she also desperately protected him in crises。
