The influence of the Spread of Western Culture on English education in modern China

Literature Review

Since 1840, China's English education in the People's Republic of China has been a very important position. English education in modern Chinese began in the period of Westernization Movement. Due to the closure of the policy, the comprehensive strength of the late Qing Dynasty is far from the western countries

After the opium war in the 1840s, The western capitalist powers opened the door of the Qing Empire with warship cannon. Foreign diplomatic activities are becoming more and more complicated. In Qing Dynasty, many foreign exchanges need to cultivate talents, especially for foreign language talents is more and more urgent. Building schools and training talents is the core of the westernization movement.

Westernization movement in line with "long skills by barbarians" and "the purpose of the modulator is constant" principle. Since 1862,Qing dynasty set up more than 30 " westernization school "in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Nanjing and other places, hopes that through learning practical technology such as western language and literature can on the road to revival.

In this article, through the analysis of China's modern history, we can understand the characteristics and effects of the early English education, the developing track of modern English education, mainly analyzes the characteristics and the impact of westernization school English education, the advantages and disadvantages of using modern English education. Make a plan about the future of the modern English education.

Abstract

The study on the relationship between culture and higher education is an important subject. Some issues on higher education need to be discussed from the culture point of view. Higher education, especially the English learning of higher education was greatly influenced by the culture evolution in China. The development of English leaning of higher education in the earlier modern China has undergone tortuous change during the culture evolution, which was the result of the eastern and western cultural communication and amalgamation. 

Culture and English education in the earlier modern China are dialectically interactive. The culture evolution which was caused by “the introduction of western learning into China” greatly changed the values, thinking way and psychological structure of the people, and then influenced every aspects of the English learning of higher education, such as English education ideology, system, teachers, curriculum, and teaching method. 

The study of “the English learning of higher education in the earlier modern China” is on the basis of history as well as the combination of historical facts and discussion. It provides the condition, experiences as well as the lessons of the English learning of higher education in the earlier modern China. The history can reflect a lot of useful things, many practices of English leaning in the past are still very valuable in the modern times, such as pay attention to the translation practices, learn the language with the sciences, emphasize the impetus to the social development of the language learning.
