A Study of Chinese and British Cultural Characteristics in the Opening Ceremony of Olympics 

Abstract: World is colorful. Every country has different history of development and forms diverse cultural backgrounds and values. The opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games provide a cultural platform and promote the development of hosting country's culture as well as the prosperity of world culture. This article intends to analyze the cultural differences between British and China by comparing the opening ceremony of Olympic Games in the following aspects: scenes, forms, and programs. In the scenes, the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games displayed the culture of harmony while the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympic Games had the cultural characteristics of aggression. Chinese culture of harmony has a long history that can trace back to nearly 2500 years ago. This culture could be well explained in the scene of Chinese Character. The opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games demonstrated the thought of harmony in a direct and prominent way. The Chinese character He appeared on the stage and changed three times which means harmony in English. However, in the forms of the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympic Games, British people paid more attention to displaying their thought of aggression and competitions. In the forms, Britain demonstrated its culture of humor through the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympic Games, but China showed its culture of orthodoxy instead. Orthodoxy here means being serious and traditional. In the programs, these two opening ceremonies of Olympic Games also embodied different attitudes towrads life. China worships the ancient achievements and keeps conservative. But British acts the other way, who likes taking adventures. This thesis is to provide an easy way for people to have a better understanding about cultural characteristics of these two countries, and also provide valuable experience for countries which are going to host the Olympic Games in the future.
