浅议英语外来词及其翻译

Abstract

 

In the recent twenty years, with China’s reform and opening policy to the outside world, Chinese society has undergone a dramatic change in various aspects. With international communications and exchanges, a great number of new concepts, things and cultures are introduced into China. As a major means of communication, Chinese language has been involved in the dynamic process of contact with other foreign languages. Among all these foreign languages, English has been the one with which the Chinese language has had the most frequent contact. Through the contact between English language and Chinese language, a number of English words have been borrowed into Chinese vocabulary. As the famous American linguist Edward Sapir said: “The language of another language is the simplest of words “loan.” As long as the lending culture, the word can be also taken up.” Starting with a presentation of some basic concepts about loanwords，this paper put the focus on the borrowing between Chinese and English and then leading to the techniques of translating loanwords and the problems in translating loanwords.
