Abstract

Sister Carrie is the first novel written by Theodore Dreiser, a famous American naturalist novelist. It tells the story of how Carrie, a naive, pure and beautiful country girl, rose from the bottom of society to the Red Five-Star Throne on Broadway, delicately demonstrating Carrie's living landscape and mental journey. This work, with real realism as its distinct feature, exposes the unemployment, poverty and hunger under the surface of the prosperity of capitalist society, and makes a profound description of the society in which the rich and the poor are opposed in the United States. Sister Carrie has always been a controversial figure in the history of American literature. This paper mainly analyses the character of the heroine Carrie and studies the character of Sister Carrie.
