一、文献综述

Charles Dickens was a prominent critical realist in the mid 19th century. He has a world of sympathy for the miseries and a strong feeling for the poor laboring masses. He cried flout loud against social injustice but he had never thought of overthrowing the existing social order. By exposing the social injustice and the vices of the upper class, he puts his heart into depicting the miserable existence of the common people. He gives a truthful picture of capitalist England of the time. Dickens vivid description creates many lives like characters which impress the readers deeply in their memory after reading. Oliver Twist is one of his masterpieces which marked the beginning of his literary life. The novel was famous for exposing the dark sides of people lived out of that time. In this novel, Nancy is a typical character who lived in the bottom of the society. She had the same suffering with Oliver Twist, but she didn’t have a happy end like Oliver. This thesis is provided to help readers appreciate this critical novel by analyzing Nancy’s complex character. I’m going to explore the reasons of shaping her double characters form different aspects. By discovering the root of Dickens’s mind and association with modern society, I hope that will be helpful to understand his work. 

Dickens’s novel Oliver Twist since its published it has caused tremendous repercussions, the study it is different, but most of them are shocked by the expression of their profound characters and the expression of good wishes. So far, the research about it is still endless. 1990s, South-Central University for Nationalities Liu Jingxiang issued a “Character Analysis of Nancy in Oliver Twist”, the article from a minor character Nancy in Oliver Twist, and the paper makes a comprehensive analysis of her character and points out the role of the character in the development of the whole story. At the same time, according to Nancy’s experience, in-depth exploration of her journey. This can not only cause readers to stop “Woman Thief” sympathy, but also help us to know the society of her true colours.

Oliver Twist is the second novel by Dickens of England in 19th Century. When writing this novel, Dickens is only 25 years old. Due to the society is darkness and injustice, Dickens s full of indignation, he is eager to awaken people through his novels, to help the poor people in dire misery. The greatest feature of this novel is true, it dares to face a bleak life, the courage to expose the ugly phenomenon of society and the courage to protest the injustice of society. Because of this, Dickens has always been defined as the founder and the greatest representative of critical realism in England literature by the scholars of our country and the former Soviet Union. Dickens used the Oliver Twist hero to explain his of human nature and evil for attack, remind us of the importance of goodness. In the novel, including Miss Ross, Nancy and Oliver are good representatives, although they live in misery, grow in the dark and full of evil in the world, they kept a pure heart of heaven and earth, they never loss their humanity, all sorts of difficulties did not make then fall, but also shows that they are strong. All these inspire us to fight with the social forces of corruption, to purify our minds and social atmosphere.

Oliver is the core of the novel, but everyone will also be impressed by the novel’s Nancy. The reason is that the contradiction between her personality and modern we have endless similarity. She wanted to get rid of thieves but lack of courage, she would like to Ross like elegant but lack of confidence, she wanted refuse to steal but because of the survive and dare not disobey. She character is the product of natural environment and social environment. At that time, the social environment and her poor birth to large extent determine her personality, and her contradictory character and to large extent predicted her tragic fate. Nancy’s contradictions character and difficult journey is like a mirror, the British society in 19th Century clearly and vividly presented in front of us. And the novel through the image of Nancy to us to convey this message: the dark social reality will drive people away from passion to apathy, from selfless to selfish, from good to evil. In a word, the image of Nancy accused the human nature of the capitalist system in 19th Century and attacked the darkness and decay of society.
