Language is the medium for human communication. Greeting, as a component of language, plays a most important role in the communication. It is one kind of speech act that frequently occurs in everyday life. Therefore, proper greeting behavior is crucial for the foundation and maintenance of interpersonal relationships.

With the development of society and culture, communication between people becomes more and more important. When China implemented its reform and opening up policy, especially after China entered WTO, communication with other countries has become more important. However, people in different countries hold different beliefs and values, which result in misunderstanding. In order to avoid the embarrassment, we should know the cross-cultural communication greeting. 

Among the foreign scholars' study on the manners, major influential theories are Leech's Politeness Principle, Brown and Levinson's (1978) Face Theory, and Grice's Cooperative Principle, which is the basis of these theories. The domestic scholar GU Yueguo (1990) also proposed the politeness principle of Chinese society. Brown and Levinson (1978) point out that greeting exist in all languages. Goff man (1971) think greetings can establish and renew relationships. Though comprehensive, but none of them mentioned the impact on the international communication so far. This paper is make up for this, from the aspects of intercultural communication, especially emphasizes the practical significance of greetings.
