The Thorn Birds is the masterpiece of Colleen McCullough, which is famous as Australia’s Gone With The Wind. The novel tells us a story which spanning three generations in that writer depicts a series of various figures and represents an infinite range of human emotions under her exquisite pen. 

Many readers are quite impressed by its moving love story and the well-shaped characters. The Clearys moved to Drogheda in New Zealand, where the innocent protagonist Maggie made the acquaintance with the ambitious priest Ralph, and love sprouted gradually. But it was doomed when Ralph accepted the inheritance from Mary Carson, Maggie's aunt, to further in his glorious career. Finally Maggie was cruelly exploited to nothing but the revelation that it was she who was responsible for her pathetic destiny.

"Life is dear, love is dearer. " With moderate and introvert outside but obstinate and tough inside, no matter how many obstacles there are in the way she never abandoned the love till the day she was drained to death.

Which like the article of “Love and Destiny in The Thorn Birds” written by Yang Zhiguang and Li Xiaopeng that Maggie is the incarnation of the thorn bird with the mission to die for love, even though Ralph served the Roman Church with all his heart and soul and she was deserted to cherish the precious but exquisite love herself.

"And, dying, it rises above its own agony to out - carol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain." The thorn bird is born to lead a vigorous life, tramping along a long uneven road for the destination of true love. The enlightenment is conspicuously described that however desperate the life has turned and whatever sacrifices one must make to gain true love, that is the destiny of the dream -chasers who are born to track down the thorn branch with hardship and exhaust all the sap for the ideal love. 

It is a legend of The Thorn Birds, this novel besides to mainly handles with the love story of Maggie & Ralph, the writer doesn’t ignore to express the characters of other figures. Three women especially Maggie who struggled bravely to pursuit the ideal love in their lifetime, but their emotional experience mostly ended in failure because of thegap between the ideal love and reality. Nevertheless, we can still feel a kind of lofty tragic beauty from the process of their pursuit． 

And Yu Jia said in her writing of “The Women Seeking to Thorns - The comment on the female images in The Thorn Birds” that the true love and the beauty should be attained with unimaginable cost, all of the profound experience of happiness must be gained by suffering the pain and persistence.

All the time, majority of marriages are based on social statue and wealth, ignoring the true love. The independent consciousness encourage the female to set up a brave view of love, to pursue their true emotions without only thinking of the background, the statue of the property, or something else objective of the lover, to be an independent women in economy and politics area with independent personality. There is an old saying in China, man proposes, God disposes. The encourage and independent emit the shine, showing the significance in a new era. All in all, women pursue true love and freedom, should have equality, dignity, and persistence.
