With the development of globalization, cultural exchanges among ethnic groups in the world are increasingly frequent, which is an important channel for people from different culture background to learn better about each other. As an important carrier of the spirit of the Chinese nation, ancient Chinese poetry has become an important channel for the transmission of traditional Chinese culture in the era of cultural integration, which also makes more and more scholars at home and abroad devote themselves to the translation of ancient Chinese poetry. However, the English translation of ancient Chinese poetry is not a simple process of language conversion, but to restore its artistic conception and interest. Poetry translation request using the closest and natural equivalent language in the target language to convey the meaning and image of the poetry in original language.   

This paper starts by discussing the relationship between cross-cultural study and poetry translation. In fact, poetry translation is not only literary activities, but also a cultural activity. In order to make the works understandable and acceptable to the readers, the translator should study the readers’ culture background. Otherwise, the result will not be understand and accept. As the difference culture background affects, cultural adaptability become a very important concept in poetry translation. The principle of cultural adaptability plays an important role in poetry translation.Because of the different language habits and cultural differences, in the process of translation, cultural adaptability should be put in a very important position in the mid of translator so that readers could accept the content well. This paper try to stress that the principles of cultural adaptability that must be followed in poetry translation. Translator should try to put cultural adaptability as an important role, so that poetry translation can be closer to the original works vividly.

In the next part of the paper, writer state the three beauty of Chinese Poetry which is the famous theory of great translator and scholar, Xu Yuanchong.

In the third part of the paper, writer focus on the study of two translation strategies, domesticating translation and foreignizing translation. There are always arguments about which strategy should be used from the beginning. The advantage and disadvantage of both strategies will also be discuss in the paper. Some support domesticating translation like Arthur Waley. Waley said that what the western readers really interested in is the content of the poetry rather than the rhyme of them, thus introducing the foreign factors in chinese culture while neglecting the use of rhyme in his works. Some prefer domesticating translation. There are many factors affect the choice of translation strategies, as Zhou Han states in her essay, including political and economic factor, linguistic factor, and reader’s needs factor. Several poems will be put as translation samples, and through the application of both strategies, writer wants to give concrete understanding of both strategies.

As two translation strategies, domestication and foreignization should be dialectical rather than exclusive. The author believes that poetry translation should  try to retain the information and culture of the original poetry under the condition that respect the cultural connotation of the original poetry, and convey it in a way that can be understood under the cultural conditions of the readers, which request translators to learn both sides’ culture. Instead of translate on words, poetry translation request cultural interaction.In practical translation activities, two translation strategies should be combined to achieve the best effect.
