Literature Review

Hemingway(1899-1961)forged a literary reputation unsurpassed in the twentieth century as a novelist and journalist. He was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1899.It’s well known that he revolutionized the American novels and brought this genre to a new era.     

As we know that Ernest Hemingway is a great public hero whose unique style in literary works is very ingenious and very popular in Europe and America. Especially this most famous novel The Old Man and The Sea. There are many researcher study Hemingway through this novel . Liu Tie, The Literary Image of The Faith and Strength Increase To People---Hemingway’s Hero Character. The other one, Sarup , Madan . Jacques Lacan,1952 of Lacanian analysis. Su Shunqiang who research Hemingway’s nihilistic thoughts. He point out this thought in his work mainly reflected in three forms :death consciousness, suffering consciousness ,the consciousness of absurdity. Hemingway’s nihilistic thoughts had a profound impact in his life and creation. But I think Hemingway take us more confidence with hero character instead of above nihilistic which will be analysis in my study.  

There will be one framework applied Hemingway's "iceberg principle" which is the end of nineteenth Century twentieth Century at the beginning of popular literature increasingly cumbersome way of deviation and betrayal. Many literary critics at domestic and abroad are much appreciated for it ,and carried on research and discussion. Such as Li Ying’s “ Iceberg Theory” of The Old Man and The Sea ,2006. Thus I will be through domestic and foreign critics of view, a collection of Hemingway's own views, in-depth analysis of the works of Old Man.

Importantly, among the most great America writers ,Hemingway famous by his writing style .Among all his works, The Old Man and Sea is a typical one to express his writing style and technique. This novel langue looks simple and natural in the surface, actually include many great technical which from writer. Sometimes in order to make some part special .The writer to use long sentence instead of short sentence. The dialogue in the novel is realistic and near life. Even that the writing style combined with realistic and artificial .In the back of the simple langue can find deep meaning and strong emotion. The author also uses many figures of speech etc artificial. This special writing style is related with his young age experience which he was a journalist. Meanwhile he learn from many famous writers and made them to be his own special style. Hemingway’s style have a important influence all of the world .

There are many facts in The Old Man and The Sea, they are all come from author’s true experience. As Hemingway chose the story by heart ,so the readers interested and can touch the scene. At the beginning of novel, main to describe the old man’s life with simple and clear writing style without any emotion sentence .As the story goes, most fact used in old man’s psychology terms instead of author tell directly . Meanwhile ,these facts made up whole novel and indispensability.  

In sum . all the above studies have it’s own valuable ideas .I will analysis this novel through Hemingway’s writing style. “No good book has ever been written that has in it symbols arrived at before hand and stuck in, ” Hemingway has said, but he points out that a tale truly told can mean many things. As Hemingway’s simile: a good writing is a grand iceberg. Only 1/8 of it is on the sea. The brief words could make readers find the deep thoughts that are contained in the rest of the iceberg under the sea.
