Abstract

Translation plays an important role in cultural and economic exchanges. And the literature translation is an important part in translation work. The translation of literature works has its undeniable importance in our social activity.

 Walden was regarded as one of the influential American essays in 19th century. In the wave of industrialization, this book put forward the thought of people should return to nature firstly. Many translators have translated this book, as an English student, I would like to try this great literary work. 

Functional equivalence theory focuses on equivalence between the source text and the target text, and shows great respect to the reader’s response. based on Functional Equivalence theory, this thesis tries to explore the specific translation strategies of Walden which could classified as a classic and typical American literature. Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory, this thesis translated several passages of Walden, using examples of some well-accepted translations. It is concluded that literal translation and free translation could be considered as proper translation strategies. This thesis also picks up some classic passage of Walden, translated it, and analyzes its structures. 

After all, translation is a complex phenomenon, whatever approach to translation is but one way of looking at the same thing from a specific angle. The present study is only a preliminary study of literature translation in functional equivalence approach. We need a more systematic study in the future.
