Abstract

. 

Pride and Prejudice is a sweet, gentle work. The story takes place in the British countryside at the end of the eighteenth Century to the early nineteenth Century and take the heroine of the emotional experience as a clue, describing a few of the young men and women’s love and marriage problems. Austen mainly described four types of marriage: the marriage of Collies and Charlotte was rolling in property and money; the marriage of Wilkham and Lydia was based on lust and sex; the marriage of Jane and Bingley processed love; the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy was based on not only love but also on common understanding. In this novel, the heroine Elizabeth’s rational view of love and marriage, her actual choice and her satisfactory ending expressed Austen’s attitude to marriage and her ideal of life. Marriage cannot be married solely for the sake of property, money and status, but it is also wrong to consider love only for marriage. 

Deeply impressed by four different marriages in Pride and Prejudice, I make an analysis of those four types of marriages in this thesis including their forms of expression, their decisive factors, their final results and come to a conclusion of Jane Austen’s ideal marriage. On the one hand, she emphasized the importance of material in marriage, on the other hand, love should also be a cornerstone of marriage.
