Today, with the deepening of globalization, all countries in the world have to communicate with each other in the process of economic and political development. International communication has become an indispensable link in the process of economic and social development of various countries. Since China's successful accession to the WTO, China's exchanges with Britain and the United States have become increasingly close. However, due to the differences in regional culture, there are some limitations in the communication between China and Britain and the United States. As a person who has been engaged in international trade for eight years, I feel particularly deeply about this. Therefore, British and American literature, which symbolizes the development of the British and American world to a great extent, can help us understand the world outlook of Britain and the United States more systematically. The literary works of any country and a famous ethnic group must contain the cultural heritage of the country. As an important embodiment of the comprehensive quality of a country and a nation, British and American literature occupies a key position in the world cultural system. British and American literary works usually depict the development process of human society more profoundly, which has important value and practical significance. Literature can be realized through various language expressions. Literary value is closely related to the expression path and cultural characteristics of practical significance. Therefore, the main way to understand literary characteristics and cultural characteristics is to study literary works in depth. By showing the development process of British and American literature and its representative period, this paper deeply studies the value and practical significance of British and American literature, which can not only excavate more western cultural characteristics and spiritual values, but also produce different cultural experiences, and promote the interaction and exchange of eastern and Western cultures.
English literature can be divided into five stages: 1. In the history of English literature, the ancient period began about 450 years ago in the park and ended in 1066. It is mainly divided into religious poetry and secular poetry. The Bible and Beowulf are the typical examples that have been handed down to this day. The Renaissance period of literature and art is from the 15th century to the 17th century. Humanism is its spirit. 2. The neoclassicism period is from the restoration of Stuart dynasty in 1660 to the romantic period in 798. It is an age of enlightenment, which advocates order, rationality and legal system. 3. The period of romanticism was from Wordsworth and Coleridge's lyric ballads to Scott's death in 1832. During the period of French Revolution and British Industrial Revolution, human rights were mainly emphasized. 4. The Victorian period was the climax of the British Industrial Revolution. During the reign of Queen Victoria, from 1836 to 1901, it was the most glorious period in British history. The country was relatively prosperous and stable, and national power gradually transferred to the middle class. Morality and common sense became the theme of the times. 5. In modern times, due to the monopoly of the bourgeoisie, the intensification of contradictions, and the loss of World War I and World War II, the sun never sets, the imperial power declines, and philosophical ideas emerge. American literature is divided into six stages. 1. The colonial period (about 1607-1765) this period lasted from about 1607 when Captain John Smith led the first group of immigrants to establish the first British colony Jamestown on the North American continent. From 1765, the colonists protested against the British government's stamp law. 2. The period of enlightenment and the war of independence (1765-18th century) was the period when the North American people fought for independence and established the United States of America and the Middle Kingdom. In the 1830s, under the influence of European Enlightenment and Deism, the role of God was greatly weakened, and the Puritans launched a "Great Awakening" movement. Literary works mainly focus on the necessity of revolution, the future and direction of revolution, and the form and nature of government. 3. In the romantic period (1800-1865), the United States entered the world political arena as an independent country in the early 19th century. National literature began to prosper in an all-round way, gradually breaking the monopoly of British literature in the United States. The writers of this period, like the British Romantic writers, emphasized the imagination and emotional color of literature, opposed the forms and views of classicism, praised the nature, and advocated the thoughts and feelings of individuals and ordinary people. These writers advocated that human beings can directly recognize the truth beyond feeling and rationality. 4. From the period of Realism (1865-1918) after the Civil War (1861-1865) to the outbreak of the first World War, the industrialization of the United States has brought about vigorous development, but also brought about political corruption. Political scandals are common. It is a land for people to re understand new life and development. As a result, local literature has been greatly developed. 5. In the period of Modernism (1918-1945), American literature entered a new era. The first World War had a great influence on American thought and spirit. People's faith in freedom and democracy began to waver, and people felt confused and even despaired. This stage is the second renaissance of American literature. The writers are looking for techniques that can reflect the social disintegration and moral decay. There are also great breakthroughs in poetry. 6. Contemporary Literature (1945 -) after the Second World War, in the eyes of American writers, the "American Dream" that has always been yearning for has become a nightmare; the ideals of democracy, personal pursuit and religious belief no longer exist. All this is reflected in literature, resulting in the "Beat Generation" writers who rejected all cultures and values in the 1950s. After the 1960s, both novels and novels take human alienation as the theme, and use exaggerated techniques and absurd plots to express people's dilemma. "Black humor", "absurd drama" and other schools have emerged.

What is the significance and value of literature? Although literature can not solve people's basic problem of food and clothing, since ancient times, no one can ignore people's love, pursuit and obsession with literature. In the real life of human society, many people who are not related to literature, like Lu Xun, give up their original career and choose the road of literature, that is, more and more people begin to boldly try what they really like. As one of the reading activities in the daily life of human society, literature is mainly based on the needs of human physiology, belonging and security, so people's reading of literary works is based on their own actual needs. Under this premise, people can clearly experience their own feelings and sense of belonging by reading relevant literary works, especially after a certain amount of reading accumulation, the knowledge and information obtained can further help people obtain respect needs. Therefore, British and American literature plays an important role in the survival and development of human society, and plays an irreplaceable value and significance.
