     Santiago is an old man who was fabled by Hemingway, he was described as perseverence hero in The Old Man and the Sea which won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Someone say he is a spokesman for “The Lost Generation”, after he got the Nobel Prize, he ended his life by himself. His life was filled with many kinds of adventures that represent in his works. (1)

     The Old Man and the Sea was a novel about Santiago who was based on a Cube fisherman battled against a gargantuan marlin and then tied it to his boat. After eighty-four days didn’t catch a fish, but he is not crestfallen, he hooks a giant marlin, after two days and nights, he finally kills the fish and take it back to home. In the meantime, blood attracts many brutal sharks, sharks attack him, Santiago have to use harpoon and oar to drive the sharks away, finally sharks eat all but a skeleton, he brings it home and have a nice dream. 

     In the novel, Santiago earns his live by fishing, he stays alone, without family and friends, lost his purpose in life. With the help of a boy who is not allow to catch fish, he began an adventure, will it can help him find the meaning of life? But what support him fighting and living is the spirit of the Code hero. And Hemingway has achieved a tragic but ennobling vision of man, which is in the tradition of Sophocles, Christ, Melville and Conrad.

Clinton S. Burhans JR (2003: 447) advocated Hemingway expressed his view of the ultimate tragic irony of man’s life. What can help him to drive him beyond his true place in life is the isolated individualism (2)

 Zhao Ying (2005) who is a Chinese researcher advocated that Hemingway did not want to create a traditional hero, she think what Hemingway wanted to express is life was an everlasting pursuit rather than some kind of achievement of failure. The Old Man and the Sea reflected the thoughts of the Lost Generation. (3)

     Feng Yanling advocated that The “Lost Generation”, this is a new generation, shouting antiquated slogans, learning outmoded dogmas. They are doomed to seek love and self-respect in this filthy, dark confusion, they fear poverty and worship victory than others, once battles have been fought, and their faith was not firm. (4)

     Gao Hong think that “The Lost Generation” believed they were lied by the power-holder, so-called democratic and the glory of war is the lie. Both of them hated the imperialist wars. (5)

Li Xiaolu’s point of view is if someone want to prove himself, he must constantly strive for his ideal life. Santiago beat the huge marlin by his own efforts, and proved his heroism and manhood. (6)

Gao Yuyan research on The Old Man and the Sea shows that Man's flesh can be defeated, but his faith cannot be defeated. Santiago is the man who dare to fight against cruel social reality and indifferent fate, is really love life, cherish life. (7)

Xi Jialei advocated Santiago is a fishermen who has strong will and young mentality, he is hard-working, kind and wise, he inner faith was impregnable. (8)

Yang Jianzhong, a Chinese scholar advocated that the author’s purpose was to create a hero with heroic spirit, encouraging people and also showing the maturity of his idea. (9)

Wu Ming advocated Santiago was a hero who faced difficulties and challenges alone, persevered in his failure with strong will. When facing pressure, he can handle it easily, The characterization of the old fisherman reflects the author's most admired qualities and values: courage, dignity, endurance. (10)

This paper will analyze the image of Santiago, insight into the characteristics of perseverence hero, and propagandize the spirit of never say never.
