The present situation of address forms in China

With the development of social economy, Chinese address system has gone through many different stages. Kinship terms can be divided into ancient kinship terms and modern kinship terms.At present, China's appellation system is one of the most complex language systems in the world.The study of address forms in modern Chinese began in the 1940s,The important figures are Rui Yifu(芮逸夫),Zhao Yuanrren(赵元任),Yu Min(俞敏)，Their books began to study kinship terms.They classified the social address forms in detail.Zhao Yuanren(赵元任) discusses the address forms in modern Chinese,.His book "various forms of address of Chinese people" lists 114 forms of address of relatives .In the 1980s, Chinese address forms has entered a new stage,During this period, many books were used to search foraddress forms.After the 1990s, the study of address forms developed rapidly,The biggest achievement is that there are many articles about appellation。In addition，the content of appellation is expanding，for example，“How to use address forms properly”，“The relationship between address forms and traditional culture”。In the era of rapid development of Internet, many domestic scholars have studied the network address terms.

The present situation of address forms in foreign countries

There is a long history of research on address forms in foreign countries. In different periods, Western linguists study social address forms from different perspectives。In western countries, the appellation's representative is Roger Brown and Albert Gilman.They studied French, German, Italian and other major European languages and summed up the two semantic relations of pronouns，power and solidarity。Power refers to an unequal relationship，One side is in a higher position, the other side is in a lower position。Roger Brown and Albert Gilman think appellation system can be divided into two patterns，the reciprocal addressing and the nonreciprocal addressing.On this basis,Roger Brown and Marguerite Ford divided the address system of American English into three semantic models,the mutual exchange of first name,the mutual exchange of title +last name and the nonreciprocal pattern.Expanding the analysis of Roger Brown and Marguerite Ford ,Ervin Tripp found the structure expressed in the diagram like a computer flow chart.He analyzed many factors affecting address.

Verschueren's book"Understanding Pragmatics"points out tha tHuman beings can choose language in the process of communication because of its variability ,adaptability and negotiability.Variability refers to a series of situations in which language is available for selection;Negotiability refers to the completion of language under the guidance of highly flexible pragmatic principles and pragmatic strategies; Adaptability refers to the fact that language users can make flexible choices from different language items, so as to meet the needs of communication as much as possible.

The address form is an address manifests the specific interpersonal relationship and role in the human society, which reflects the relations between one person and person in the certain social culture or the specific language environment. An address form is polite in one culture, but might be inappropriate in another culture. 

The address forms mainly include social appellation and kinship appellation,According to the knowledge of linguistics, folk custom and cultural background,This paper expounds the similarities and differences between English and Chinese appellations, and studies the causes of the differences。

The significance of address forms research

Different countries have their different address system,and address form is an important part of the language culture.In linguistic communication, address form is always the first information transmit to the audience.Ir can reflect social status, affinity relationships,values and so on.An appropriate address form promotes interpersonal communication smoothly.In different culture climate, the same address form may have different pragmatical meanings.By comparing address forms, we can find the differences between English and Chinese in address forms, and understand the social and cultural factors that lead to these differences.If we can avoid address forms pragmatic failures in intercultural communication, becoming more free and relaxed between countries.In summary, address form is a very important social linguistic issue.,Accurate understanding and command of address forms can lead to successful results in intercultural communication.

Research methods of the article

With the development of society, we have more opportunities to contact with foreigners. Language is a kind of culture. The social address form is the most complex in address forms, and its classification covers a wide range, which is the difficulty of research.

This paper mainly uses contrastive analysis to explore the differences between English and Chinese address forms, so as to use them correctly, avoid cultural conflicts and achieve communication purposes.
