Chinese “Redology” is profound and extensive and its creation art is endless. Since the finished creation of A Dream in Red Mansions in 1784, until now, all kinds of researches on A Dream in Red Mansions never stop, and there appeared professional research on A Dream in Red Mansions- Redology. There are thousands characters of A Dream in Red Mansions, and each person has unique name. Redology researchers found the name art and name culture of China under the personal name translation in A Dream in Red Mansions. These names are the symbols of characters and possess their relatively independant aesthetic values as well. In modern society, people also do profound researc hand summary in details regarding the personal names in A Dream in Red Mansions. The famous Redology expert named Hu Wenbin mentioned in his work of “ A Dream in Red Mansions and Chinese Name Culture” that “ Cao Xueqin adds the gorgeous and dazzing color for the characters of A Dream in Red Mansions by names, and makes name became the inevitable art cell of the whoile book creation construction. These personal names are a kind of symbol with profound connotation and aesthetic values.  
In literature translation, original taste should be remained and transfer the foreignization factor of the original text is of great importance. However, Li Yun& Peng Jianwu(2010)thinks that the foreignization translation should pay attention to the limitation and the excessive foreignization may result in superficial in literature translation. If reflected in translation, pronunciation translation suits for the habit of Chinese naming habits, which is typical loyal translation. However, loyal translation does not mean perfect translation. From aesthetic effect, it is just the superficial translation with great limitation. Just like what ...says, “once the name is translated by Pinyin, no meanings at all, other than the beauty in text.” Lin Wangye(2007) points out that “Cao Xueqin combines two skills of translation in character names. However, the pronunciation facilitates each lively names with special connotations lost its soul and changed into dry Piyin symbols and thus made translation readers unable to have similar or same imagination and experience like original A Dream in Red Mansions readers.
 The English translation of A Dream in Red Mansions can be traced back to 1830, until now, it passed more than 170 years. For English translation versions of A Dream in Red Mansions with the most public approvals, there are only two versions which translated respectively by David Hawkes( The Story of the Stones) and Couple Yang Xuanyi. In recent years, domestic famous Redology experts usually lock their targets in the research on personal names translation with punning rhetoric function, and the purpose lies in exploring the hidden significance and the preparing for the following plot development. At the same time, both scholars at home and abroad analyzes personal name translation methods from perspective of domestication and foreignization. 


A Dream in Red Mansions is one of the four classic famous works of China, and its deep and profound cultural connotation possesses the high honor in the world. At the same time, there are many English version of A Dream in Red Mansions. Name in A Dream in Red Mansions does not only stand for the simple symbol of characters in the work, Cao Xueqin entrusts the distinct characteristics and even the destinies of characters onto these names, therefore, regarding the translation of these names, how to transfer the real purpose of names entrusted by the author is a hard task. This paper choose to do analysis on the name translation in A Dream in Red Mansions from perspective of domestication and foreignization by taking David Hawkes’s English version of A Dream in Red Mansions. This thesis aims to show whether domestication or foreignization is more suitable for name translation. At the same time, this research also illustrates that both domestication and foreignization have its own value in translation, and for the transportation of different cultural information, both of them can have positive effects on it. 
  Breakthrough: Cao Xueqin is serious about personal names in A Dream in Red Mansions, and from these personal names, readers can see the creation mind of him and thus understand the hidden intentions of him in names, in this way, it can help reading A Dream in Red Mansions with interesting. This research can help readers understand the connection betweeen personal names and their fates from deep connotation perspective and it makes people rethink with interesting and enjoyment. Many people know the names in A Dream in Red Mansions, it has its own unique knowledge. On one side, it integrates Chinese language charm, on the other hand, it entrusts profound connotation. Personal name illustration will surely have certain limitation. While foreigner translate A Dream in Red Mansions, they will firstly encounter the personal names translation barrier, among name translation, there are translation for personal names with good or poor interpretation or even humorous. This paper will start with the original contents of A Dream in Red Mansions, and combines with the documents to analyze the miracle connection between personal names and original edition of A Dream in Red Mansions. At the same time, it analyzes the personal names in original version from perspective of pronunciation and image as well as connotation aesthetics by classifying personal names in servant and lord and other kind of person, in this way, it makes this research process interesting and full of curiosity. This research applies the living examples to compare the differences in name translation under the conditions of domestication and foreignization, and combines rhetoric methods such as punning and antiphrasis and Chinese traditional culture, and so on, to analyze the different effects of personal names translation by adopting different translation strategies.
