《当幸福来敲门》中美国梦的体现 -开题报告

一、国内研究现状

The original American Dream did not refer to the American people’s dream. Strictly speaking, it should refer to the dream of the British puritans. They were eager to build a city on the top of the mountain in the new world. In ancient Greek legend, Olympus is the residence of gods and the synonym of heaven, so the city on the top of the mountain represents the most ideal country and the model of the whole world. At that time, the North American continent had a unique and superior natural environment. The puritans saw this as the ideal place to establish freedom, democracy and equality. At the same time, the North American continent was sparsely populated, far away from Britain.Without religious persecution and oppression, individuals had absolute freedom, so they can use their creative talents and realize their personal values. It is in this environment that their creative potential can be maximized, and it is this kind of creative life that cultivates their confident, positive and optimistic character, which is exactly the core concept and spirit of the American Dream in its infancy.

In the early 19th century, a large area of land in the western part of the United States had no owners. Oil fields and gold mines were discovered one after another, and people were ecstatic with the opportunity to become rich. Then a gold rush swept across the country, and the Westward Movement of the United States accelerated its progress, which indirectly promoted the development of the American Dream. When people were exploiting oil, gold and other resources, they seemed to see the hope of having more wealth. They firmly believed that they could achieve success and enjoy endless wealth there. At that time, America was full of song and dance, as if the breath of air was filled with the soft scent of wine, and the stirring jazz music was ringing in the ears with hope. These social phenomena made the America a happy country like a paradise on earth. People believed that everyone was equal and free and had the right to enjoy happiness as long as they made their own efforts. Because of the hard work of immigrants, the United States accelerated its development and attracted more immigrants, which indirectly promoted the further development of the American Dream.

二、国外研究现状

After entering the 20th century, American Dream combines tradition with modernity, but due to the gradual fading of traditional spiritual value, material wealth has become the starting point and foothold of the pursuit of American Dream. In order to pursue fame and wealth, people began to abandon their faith, and their morality began to decline. The American Dream has gradually become a political tool for the United States to realize its national interests.The dominant values of American society emphasize that the maintenance of the existing political and economic order and requires the pursuit of personal dreams and the elimination of all conflicts based on personal profit. With its solid material and spiritual foundation, the American dream has been popularized all over the world. The United States has gradually established a series of multiple export systems including political, economic, military and cultural perspectives. At the end of the 20th century, American Dream gradually embodies the meaning of World Dream.

Since the 21st century and with the development of modern society, the American dream seems to have changed substantially. But in any case, the American dream has always been the spiritual symbol of the American people, and it will continue to inspire countless people who pursue their dreams.
