Significance and present situation of the research

With the deepening of China's opening to the whole world, the international exchanges at different levels, such as domestic and foreign governments, enterprises and the public, are constantly increasing, and this kind of Cross-Cultural communication will gradually become an indispensable part of people's life. Due to the regional differences, different nationalities and countries have formed different cultures. When people communicate with someone who have different cultural backgrounds, the communicative culture in Cross-Cultural communication is formed by the linguistic and non-linguistic factors that affect the effect of information transmission.

Food culture is also an important part of non-linguistic culture in Cross-Cultural communication. Understanding the differences between Chinese and Western food cultures and their origins can not only increase the understanding of the language and culture which are learned, but also improve the success rate of Cross-Cultural communication, so as to avoid misunderstanding and communication barriers caused by inappropriate ways or behaviors, and then enhance the understanding and promote communication.

At present, the research and discussion on the differences between Chinese and Western food culture are mainly carried out from the following aspects or perspectives.

First, from the perspective of the differences between Chinese and foreign traditional cultures.  In her work "Analysis of the Causes and Research Significance of The Differences between Chinese and Western Food Cultures", Jiang Yan analyzes that Chinese traditional culture puts propriety first and all aspects of life are inseparable from eating. While western culture is more open and integrated, and life is more casual and simple, just taking eating as a necessary means of survival.

The second is from the perspective of differences in agricultural institutions. In her work "Differences between Chinese and Western Food Cultures Due to Different Agricultural Structures", Wang Qingnan analyzes that Chinese food culture is a cultural system based on traditional agricultural production, which is rooted in agricultural economy, mainly based on plant raw materials and with a high proportion of domestic and livestock raw materials. The western agricultural structure has been a mixed structure of agriculture and animal husbandry, since ancient times to animal husbandry developed.

Third, from the perspective of national character and religious belief differences. In their work “Comparison of Chinese and Western Food Cultures and Analysis of Cultural Geography”, Lu Li and Cao Shitu have analyzed that Chinese people tend to be implicit and harmonious in their national character, preferring to live and work in peace and stability. While Western nations, originated from the "hunting nation", are extroverted, open, aggressive, like challenges, persistent pursuit, and willing to take risks.

This paper aimed at Chinese and  Western diet culture and its role in the daily communication, Chinese and Western food culture in the diet concept, methods and manners,  to explore the differences between Chinese and Western diet culture under contemporary society with fuses intersection , and the positive role that the diet culture plays in the increasingly frequent Cross-Cultural communication.
