浅析《简爱》的女性主义意识开题报告

Jane Eyre is the iconic novel written by the famous British female author Charlotte Bronte(1816-1855) in the year of 1847, and is subtitled‘An Autobiography’. It is an  example of a bildungsroman- a work that traces the education and development of its heroine, and follows her journey throughout life. The text combines realism with fairy tale and Gothic motifs. Jane gets bullied and hurt both in mental and physical aspects. However, she is still a rebellious and minded orphan. Until she is sent to Lowood School, those bulling tragedy remain. Eventually she becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets her employer and lover Edward Rochester who holds a dark secret and is already married to an insane woman incarcerated in the attic. Thanks to her strong feminist consciousness: noble soul, firm belief, equal love, independent personality status, the vitality of Jane Eyre is immortal, eventually Jane Eyre obtains happiness and peace in love. The novel successfully shows the ups and downs of love experience of hero and heroine, it celebrates the freedom from all old customs and prejudices, successfully creates an image of a woman who dares to strive for freedom and peaceful status. 

In the 19th century, women’s social position is inferior to men in Britain. However, confroned with great hardships, the heroine of this work-Jane Eyre, never knuckles under. She still remains inner kindness, but also cultivates independence and self-respects.Also, she insists on some unique opinions of love and marriage. Her pure and noble soul brings us aesthetic emotions and spiritual strength. She encounters great difficulties and spiritually toxic affliction. In addition, she has never given up. Instead, she traces her beliefs and own personality which helps her become a successful and great woman and wins respect from the society. From the feminist viewpoint, this thesis attempts to analyze the great female image- Jane Eyre and shows its historical and modern significance. Her feminism consciousness not only arouse the self-respect and become independence to women themselves in past but also in modern society.

Introduction 

Social and culture Background of Jane Eyre. 

The period when Jane(the heroine in the novel Jane Eyre) lived roughly corresponds with the time of queen Victoria who ruled over the British Empire for over 60 years was a well known queen in British story. She mounted the throne in 1837 when British literature reached a prosperous period. In the 1940s, British literature reached its peak. The realists were one of the main groups at that time, and the author of Jane Eyre belonged to this group.

In this period of tense class struggle appeared a new literary trend-critical realism. 

British critical realism of the 19th century flourished in the forties and in the early fifties. The critical realists described with much vividness and great artistic skill the chief traits of the ENgish society and criticized the capitalist system from a democratic viewpoint. The method of critical realism was further adopted by such writers as Charlotte Bronte. In writing Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte chiefly resorts to the realistic approach, but her realism is heightened by her sparkle of romantic imagination. The novel is marked throughout by intensity.  

The first learner involved in this theme is WeiZhang in domestic area. His Charlotte “Liberation Theme on Femals (<Graduate Study Newspaper>, 1st 1984) analyzes that Jane Eyre shows the self-liberation for women. In one respect, it is women’s economy independence. If women have no economic dominant, women can not obtain liberation and independent. Although WeiZhang has not come up with the idea directly, she has realized the conscious of women independent. HongZhu has the work of Jane Eyre and Feminist Consciousness (<Henan University Study Newspaper> 5th, 1987), has cited the original sentence: I am not the angel, I am myself”, which shows the feminist consciousness is the core of the novel. Jane conquers the old customs and pursue the life for herself, and wins the respect and obtain love from her husband.

3 Jane Eyre’s Attitude Towards Love

3.1 Equality and mutual understanding promote Jane Eyre’s love view.

3.2 The marriage must be based on self-respect and true love. 

4 Women should be allowed to use their talents nowadays on the influence of Jane Eyre. 

4.1 Women nowadays should learn from Jane Eyre and build feminist consciousness. 

4.2 Self-respect and independence will help women to build confidence in life such as economy independence.
