1). Jane Austen is the outstanding woman novelist of Britain in the 19th century. Her fiction with social scenic style not only attracted vast readers long ago, but also brings with a unique artistic even by today. Her works displayed the art of irony and portrayed many classic characters. As to Pride and Prejudice, Austen’s most popular and perhaps the greatest novel, it is most typical in its profuse use irony. However, in literary studies, many people only focus on the heroine’s characters or the author’s marriage and love value. Since the novelist invested so much time on refining her language, we have no reason to neglect her language technique in study. Thus this paper aims at making analysis on application of irony in Pride and Prejudice. Through analysis of the characterization, situation and structure, readers can know more about the book, and know the author’s writing style. Besides, the art of irony in Pride and Prejudice can be appreciated; readers can understand Austen how to use irony to express the topic, to create characters and to develop plots.

2). Scholars and researchers have carried out much deep research into Austen’s irony.

In China, Zhu Hong’s book Analysis Austen has long received popularity and favoritism .In this book author analyses Jane Austen in detail, especially focuses on her writing style. In this part, the author researches irony in Pride and Prejudice, according to the dialogue between Elizabeth and Darcy, author analyses the Austen how to use irony to portray the heroine’s character. But author didn’t pay more attention to novel’s plot and structure.

In the paper, Irony: Creativity Essence and Life of Jane Austen written by Fan Li-nan. The author introduces irony is the typical style of Jane Austen’s masterpiece; it is the essence and life of her novel. By using it, Jane Austen shows her thoughts and viewpoints about marriage. But this paper just introduces the effect of using irony.

In my opinion, Pride and Prejudice is a representative masterpiece written by Jane Austen. The application of irony is one of characteristics in the fiction. The author has described many comic and classic characters and developed some unforgettable plot by skillfully using irony .Moreover, according to analyses irony in Pride and Prejudice; we can appreciate the effect of using irony, and according to learn the author’s background, we can understand why the author chose this style to show her viewpoint.

课题的主要内容：

    This thesis mainly contains five parts: I. The introduction to the book Pride and Prejudice.

II. Jane Austen’s irony. III. Analysis of irony in Pride and Prejudice. IV. The effect of using irony in Pride and Prejudice. V. Conclusion.

Part I. The introduction to the book Pride and Prejudice. This part tells people the important role of this book in literary world, and introduces its main plot. 

Part II. Jane Austen’s irony. This part introduces the author, and her background, and gives a summary of various reviews of Jane Austen’s achievement, especially the evaluations of her irony, and argues about the reason for using irony. Meanwhile, this paper gives the concept and classification of irony.

Part III. Analysis of irony in Pride and Prejudice. This part elaborates the uses of the irony in Pride and Prejudice. Irony in this book is used wonderfully to portray characterization, develop situation and construct structure. Thus, this paper focuses on the application of characterization, situation and structure. In each of them, some representative example will be provided.

Part IV. The effect of using irony in Pride and Prejudice. Austen describes some humorous characters by skillfully using irony, and her irony make the whole story full of funny. Besides, it reflects author’s attitude towards using irony; her irony is primarily a mode of seeing things, a way of viewing life.

Part V. Conclusion. Make a summary to conclude my thesis and point out irony is the most outstanding characteristic in Pride and Prejudice.

研究方法：

    本文主要采用文献研究进行研究。通过从网络上搜集资料，包括国内外著名且权威的网站和杂志发表的文章，学术^范文，并在各个图书馆查阅相关书籍、报纸期刊、杂志和其他有用资源，以及一些知名书评人对小说，作家各方面的评价入手，获取比较全面的信息。将几种方式获得的资源相结合，以总结和实际分析的方式进行研究，使得所用的参考资料更具有理论性和说服力。

1.2015.9.23-2015.10.13：在老师指导下查找资料，确定^范文题目和方向，提出^范文构思，撰写^范文大纲；

2.2015.10.14-2015.10.25: 按照开题报告的要求撰写开题报告；

4.2015.10.28-2011.11.17: 提交^范文初稿，按照导师提出的要求和建议修改^范文；
