Body language is an important medium through which people communicate with each other.And many have been devote to the analysis of body language’s effect.In school education,body language plays an positive role in cultivating the students characters.

Body language in classroom is a means of communication by teachers,which can play its unique role consciously.Moreover,the unique role can not be separated from the specific teaching situation.Once it leaves the situation,it will be difficult to reflect the special connotation of teacher’s body language in the classroom.Teacher’s body language in classroom are teacher’s individual actions and gestures,such as facial expressions,eye contact,posture,signal language and so on.

Recent years,many sociologists,psychologists,and linguists have made many researches on the definition,classification,characteristic and function of the body language communication.It’s evident that body language is an indispensable element in human interaction.Before we try to investigate the application of body language to English teaching and learning,we must make clear what body language first.

In 1940s,a group of American anthropologist stated that people’s body movements

were actually some code which can reveal something.Then the nonverbal communication study begin.

  Fu qiuning,did researching on the influence of body language in primary school English study.She fond teacher’s nonverbal behaviors can not only influence the student’s English learning attitude and achievement,and effect the affinities between teachers and students.Positive nonverbal behaviors can convey positive information,and the negative nonverbal behaviors will influence the students’ interest and their marks.Yanping(1994) claimed that body language could be divided three classes:proxemics which refers to personal space,paralanguage which disposes how people talk about things,kinesics refers to motions of any part of the body.

  In short,all the above studies have put forward valuable ideas about the importance of body language in English teaching.However,little attention has been paid to in English classroom teaching for senior high school students.Thus my study may hopefully make some contribution in this direction.
