Literature Review

I. The Purpose and Significance of Research
As the opening-up deepens and information era accelerates, which enables us to obtain a great deal of information in a short time and promotes the diversification of international cultural exchange channels, filmworks have been one of the major channels by which to broaden our horizon. Western media formats, such as American dramas, British dramas and Hollywood blockbusters, etc, have taken considerably more hold of our learning life. In reality, most people in China have no ability to directly review foreign films, most of which have original soundtracks and foreign subtitles. Henceforth, subtitle translation has been an integral part of literal translation and key part of films against the backdrop of globalization. The research on subtitle translation helps us better understand the substance of those works and further assimilate the political, economic and cultural essence so as to promote intercultural exchanges, understandings and communications.

II. The Current Situations of Research Both at Home and Abroad
Abroad: 
Subtitle translation can be traced back to western countries. Nowadays, there are mainly western scholars who are specialized at the front end of this sector. In 1991, in the funding of European media institute,Luyke cooperating with four European film translation experts published the book Dvercoming Language Barriers in Television:Dubbi and Subtitling for the European Ausience. In 1992, the Swedish subtitles translator Lvarsson published 
Subtitling for the Media:A Handbook of Art. Translation studies of western movie and TV entered the era of rapid development in 1995, and the researches of relevant theory obviously increased, and the research achievements of European scholars were also particularly remarkable.Eugene Nida was one of the representatives, and was also the international famous linguist. According to the statistics,Nida individually or jointly published 40 academic monographs, more than 250 research papers, of which the most influential one was Toward a Science of Translating published in 1964, and the second influential one was The Theory and Practice of Translation co-written by Nida andCharles Taber. In addition,Gambier also isundisputed leader in the field of film translation, and the ranges his research involved were deep and wide, such as how to classify different patterns of film translation, film translation strategies and techniques and audience of film translation and so on, which was quite accomplished.He researched the subtitle translation from the perspective of linguistics in detail, and these researches were sound in how to translate idioms and the teaching of subtitle translation.
. In general, western countries have attached much importance to related researches on filmworks translation recently as the theory studies broaden and deepen and related techniques and strategies of filmworks translation have formulated a set of standards and systems. 
At home:
Although China boasts prestigious history, when it comes to theory studies of subtitle translation, it lags behind western countries, even later than film translation. Few set foot in this new sector where no systematic theory has been formulated. There are few books and works related to subtitle translation available and a scanty few of distinguished scholars.  Currently, film translation still has much room to improve and more profound researches on related techniques and strategies are necessary. China is expected to formulate its own research system of film translation.
Nevertheless, ever more Chinese films go global thanks to the rapid development of network, and western media formats, such as American and British dramas, more popular in our learning life. As the key part of a film, subtitle translation has caused the rise of domestic subtitle groups which means a non-profit civil group of amateurs who produce subtitles of native languages for foreign films, a novelty born in the era of internet of things The American drama subtitle groups in China mainly include Edon and Renren, among others. Also, the rise of subtitle groups has caused influx of overseas works. Recently, overseas films have increased remarkably, related to all age ranges.
III. Difficult Point of Subtitle Translation
As a new sector, particularly subtitle translation, it is highly demanding with regard to the logical, artistic and infectious qualities of language. Thus, the really difficult point of film translation does not lie in the rigor of a paper or its wording but expressing original meaning through the most common and idiomatic language.
