1. Research on Wuthering Heights abroad

Wuthering Heights, the only novel of Emily Bronte, is regarded as a brilliant work in British literary history. It is praised as Spinx in literature which attracts researchers of different generations to explore from different aspects. As a matter of fact, in the first few years when Wuthering Heights is just published, it suffers a cold treatment and misunderstanding, because similar and repeated comments on this works are that the plots are vulgar, inelegant and fragmentary; the content is odd and deviates reality much; the style is gloomy, horrific and wild; the language of this works is slang-oriented; and the characteristics of the novel are evil and morally-bad. In short, it is treated as an immature and unacceptable novel at that time. Even when Charlotte Bronte writes prelude for Emily’s Wuthering Heights, she says that it is probably not reasonable and unacceptable to create such a character as Heathcliff.

Sydney Daubert is the first critic who speaks highly of this work. He elucidates Emily’s gift in detail more than any other critics did. Sydney says “In terms of simplicity, few prose of that time could compare with Wuthering Heights, the effect of surrealistic descriptions even make reader believe they are true and Catherine and Heathcliff both are newfangled characters” (Cao, 2019:78).

In 1883, Mary Robbinson’ Emily Bronte which is the first biography of Emily Bronte is published. This biography later influences Swinburne and Mary Ward’s comments on Wuthering Heights. In the late 19th century, Bronte Society is established, which shows critics’ high interest on Bronte sisters. During the first two decades of 20th century, Emily and her novel are often comparatively studied with dramas written in Elizabeth age, especially works of Shakespeare and those of Wenster. Meanwhile, some researchers suggest that readers can understand Wuthering Heights better if it is studied together with her poems, which opens a new way to research this novel. Since 1920s, researches on Wuthering Heights are more and more multiple, as the novel begins to be universally explored from different critical theories.

Besides, some studies are about the characters in the novel. Manette (2010) discusses Lockwood, a figure who is always neglected by critics. According to him, Lockwood is his double, an alter ego who parallels Heathcliff 's experience as he negates it. And just as Heathcliff evolves towards fulfillment, so does Lockwood. Jennifer (2013) explains the development of the character of Heathcliff and his action in Wuthering heights. According to her, Heathcliff is a abused child and is treated as liminal “Other”, which causes Heathcliff ‘s borderline personality. As a result, he abuses human beings and animals and constantly rejects social laws. Samantha (2013) says that Heathcliff is often criticized as a villain by most critics, but he believes that Heathcliff is placed in a position through Nelly and Lockwood’s narration, which causes him to be a villain.

2. Research on Wuthering Heights at home

Domestically, researches on Wuthering Heights are relatively late compared with

those at abroad. Bronte sisters are first introduced to Chinese readers on the woman magazine in 1917. Since the first Chinese edition, Yuan Jia Lu Zhai, is published in 1930, Wuthering Heights has been constantly translated, published and republished, which affect generations of Chinese readers. Researches on Wuthering Heights in China also have experienced a gradual process. From 1920s to 1940s, it is the initial research phase during which only some simple comments based on impression appears on magazines and newspapers and it is not known to many Chinese readers. From 1950s to 1970s, few articles appear on magazines because of political reasons. Since 1970s, researches on Wuthering Heights has been gradually explored. In 1987, the first symposium on Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights is held in Shanghai when the literary value of Wuthering Heights has been fully affirmed. Since then, Wuthering Heights is universally explored from different literary theories and series of research results have been achieved. Through the review of researches on Wuthering Heights at home and abroad, researches mainly include the following aspects: thematic, stylistic, characters studies and studies compared with other literary works.
