Vocabulary is one of the three elements of language, which is very important in English learning and teaching for the senior middle school. Thus, how to help students to remember a great amount of vocabulary will be the core tasks of the English teaching. This paper discusses some effective techniques in teaching vocabulary in the senior middle school. The most important part of this paper is how to use techniques to teach vocabulary.
A great number of experts from home and abroad have done profound researches and come up with a lot of modern educational theories.As is known to all,English plays a very important role in National College Entrance Examination and vocabulary is the basis of English learning. Therefore,English teachers attach great importance to it,for they know if there is a lack of vocabulary,other language abilities cannot be improved.However,in practical teaching,due to teachers’ different teaching concepts and strategies as well as various learning environment around students,there are still many unsatisfactory aspects:1.boring vocabulary lessons could not encourage students to learn actively;2.teaching activities are not designed according to students’ interest so that students are unwilling to participate;3.teacher-centered teaching methods only allow students to take notes passively and remember words mechanically.As a result,they will lose interest in learning English.
The new English Curriculum Criteria sets higher requirements for vocabulary teaching and learning.Based on this presupposition,how English teachers in senior middle school can effectively teach vocabulary becomes an important problem that teachers should put greater emphasis on.This thesis aims to solve the problems existing in vocabulary teaching and give answers to three questions:(1)How can students’ interest in vocabulary learning be aroused? (2)How can we enable students to expend their vocabulary? (3)How can we improve students’ ability of vocabulary use? And eventually improve our students’ language communicative ability to meet the new English Curriculum Criteria’s requirements.
This thesis firstly studied current situation of English Vocabulary Teaching in senior middle school in the world. It was found that the problems of this teaching are the low efficiency and wasting much time. Students’ poor vocabulary learning is ascribed to lack of knowledge of English lexicology;lack of cultural knowledge relevant to words and idioms;employment of impractical traditional approaches and so on.In reference to the requirements of the new English Curriculum Criteria,along with the practical situations in vocabulary teaching in senior schools,some general principles on vocabulary teaching and the main contents of English vocabulary are clarified in the paper.
In the second chapter, the author mainly discusses the methods of cultivating students’ interest and hobby; In the third chapter, the author suggests a dozen efficient methods of vocabulary teaching,such as teaching vocabulary with games;teaching vocabulary by Using Idioms or Proverbs;teaching vocabulary according to the stories and songs;teaching vocabulary with telling jokes etc.
At the end of the thesis,the author draws the following conclusion.Although middle school students in China are required to acquire a larger English vocabulary,as long as we optimize methods or techniques that are suitable for EVTL,bring students’ initiative into full play,and make efforts to create a good learning atmosphere we are bound to gain twice the result with half the effort,achieve satisfactory efficiency in EVTL and greatly enhance our students’ language communicative ability. 
In this thesis the author takes a premier exploration of effective classroom activities for lexical learning,hoping that it Call offer some implication on practical teaching and at the same time inspire future research.
