“The Lost Generation” usually refers to a generation of adults during the first world war. Hemingway used the "lost generation" in his novel"The Sun Also Rises”,so this name is well known.The most famous person are Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Eliot, Faulkner,etc…“The Lost Generation” even though was an ephemeral tide,but its position in the history of American literature is certain.

 A lot of people devoted to the analysis of the lost generation feel disillusionment, emptiness, disappointed , confused persecuted by the war. However, only a few key point is about the authors in this kind of pain even still full of hope about the future, and showed through a small role in the book. After that, I will analysis from this aspects of “the lost generation is also ‘a hopeful generation’ ’’.

First of all, let me introduce the research background .The well known filim "The Great Gatsby" released in 2013 and caused a big stir, was pretty acclaimed. The background is the Jazz Age, lost generation-this literary genre was flourishing. Whereby I want to use this background of the topic for my thesis showed from through representatives writers’ works of the lost generation to study the lost generation except they want to convey the disillusionment and confusion, extend another theme of hope for the future. Except “lost”, all have a weakness of human nature, there must be a different character from the rest in the book, metaphor with hope and light, let the reader feel unexpected rescued from a desperate situation.

Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises" depicts the life scenes of a group of young people living in Europe after the war. But as the title of the article- The Sun Also Rises, the role of the sun showed by Romero, everyone just repeating accomplish nothing life, go round and round again and final back in situ . Only Romero, carrying the author's hope ,elegant face to death, rational face to life, mental immensely powerful standing on the earth.One generation passeth away,and another generation cometh;But the earth abideth forever…Cuiwansheng and Zhangwenghui published " prosperity, war, lost, escape ─on analysis of The Sun Also Rises’’.In Hemingway's book, the author mentioned that except bullfighter romero, no one final to live a happy life, Cohn cannot forget he is a Jew, Michael could not get rid of the troubles of pursuit of Brett, Brett love Jake but bring herself deeper suffering, almost all of them were in distress, disillusionment and loss, takes the way of escape from life. Also represents the westerners can't find a way out in that time. Although the author is mentioned but did not talk about that Hemingway wanted to express the metaphorical theme of hope.

Fitzgerald not only was the representative writer on the lost generation,but also was the poet laureate of the jazz age.His magnum opus "The Great Gatsby" showed the disillusionment of the American dream.In addition, the article exists a special metaphor object - the green light.In heart of Gatsby, green light represents the Daisy, but in the author mind, green light represents hope. Pengliang published “Gatsby's idealism and disillusionment with the American dream”expound Gatsby’s dream disillusionment meaning American dream was disillusion through Gatsbu’sWealth view, love view, life view.But didn't mention the hope this metaphor meaning as a whole. So I'd like to interpret this article from the angle of green light.

The thired famous novel is Faulkner’s “The Sound and The Fury”.It’s about the family tragedy of the southern landowner, the compson family.Black people maid Dilsey, is a highlight of the whole, is the embodiment of love, is a reflection glory of humanity.In Compson’s family, although Dilsey is just a black people cook, But she plays a pivotal role in the family, always to maintain this family. She cares more about the children than Mrs. Compson, to give their selfless love, also do not wish for any return,he is always positive,not be pessimistic.Miaoyongmin published“Faulkner's novels and modern tragic spirit” analyzed the modern tragic spirit is modern people's endless pursuit of the reality of human existence,to see the hope of the future on south. This spirit is perfectly embodied in Dilsey, but the author did not talk more about Dilsey. in detail. I will elaborate on the "limited perspective" of the black maid, Dilsey.

Above all, all the above studies have put forward valuable ideas about “hopeful generation”. However, there seems to be a lack of in-depth and detailed analysis of figure. So I'd like to be able to come up with some ideas about what I think about this.
