News headline is a condensed form and a miniature of the news story. Many readers grab the gist of news reports by scanning the headlines, which proves headline is an effective delivery of abundant information within very few words. To realize this point, the editing and composing of headlines deviate and depart from other normal forms of writing, which endow headlines with distinctive stylistic features. Since many scholars at home and abroad have made researches on news headlines and headlinese, the language adopted in headline composition is worth analyzing. Therefore, this paper chooses and analyzes examples in USA Today.

     With the advance of internationalization and globalization, people all over the world are well-informed of events happened at home and abroad through various channels of news media. 

Nowadays news report and news edition gain their due attention from scholars and researchers, and journalism also becomes an important discipline, which studies the collecting, writing, editing, and presentation of news or news articles in newspapers and magazines and in radio and television broadcasts.

News media show an internationalized trend nowadays, thanks to which people can easily get to know what is happening and what has happened in the world instantly. More and more non-English speaking countries use English in their certain media channels to air current events to the outside world, the same is true in China. So a better understanding and comprehension of the stylistic features of journalistic English can help Chinese news editors write out more authentic English news, being fully understood by foreigners and good studying materials for English learners in China. As for the significance of this study, it can help both news editors and readers have an all-round understanding of news headlines, which turn out to be the biggest obstacle in news reading. Therefore, the revelation of the stylistic features of headlines can better both editors’ writing and readers’ understanding. What’s more, it also can contribute to perfect stylistic features of journalistic English. This paper tries to have a thorough and detailed description of stylistic features of headlines, from the levels of graphology, lexis, grammar and rhetoric. What’s more, this paper also focuses on newsworthiness, i.e. news values, including Timeliness, Brevity, Unambiguity, Prominence, Proximity, Authority, Oddity and Human Interest. To realize these values, different writing methods are adopted, which include deviated graphological, lexical, grammatical as well as rhetoric features. Therefore, the writer of the thesis combines news values with stylistic features of headlines and makes an attempt to dig out the connections between the two.
