一、文献综述

In the mid-19th century, the British famous writer Charlotte Bronte created her representative Jane Eyre to vividly describe the history of struggle for ordinary women, resulting in an extensive influence on the British society at that time. In today’s society after this literature has been created for one and half a century. Until now, it has had numerous readers. Research enthusiasm of Chinese and overseas scholars for Jane Eyre remains unchanged. 

Wu Juan pointed out in the Progress from Awakening to Return that women were in a subordinate position in the history of patriarchal society. The winding course of British women in the 19th century embodied by Jane Eyre stated the plight and heartfelt wishes of women by using the author’s personal experience to inspect the social reality from the female perspective, vividly reveal the frustrated destiny of women in the patriarchal society, and profoundly uncover their emotional crisis, moral bewilderment and rebellious consciousness. 

As reviewing the famous literary work Jane Eyre, Carnegie said, how can the ostentatious and eccentric manor owner Rochester fall in love with poverty-stricken and ordinary tutor Jane Eyre? Jane Eyre is self-confident and self-esteem and full of personal charisma. The reason why the artistic image of Jane Eyre can shock readers in various countries is that the protagonist considers the self-confidence and self-esteem as the pillar of life based on goodness and courageousness, thus her personal charisma can be fully displayed. 

Meanwhile, some comments attack Jane Eyre. For example, Quarterly Review thinks that it has “bad taste”. As we all know, feminist movements in Europe and America appeared in the 1960s and became unprecedentedly popular in the 1970s. Feminist writers appealed to men’s and women’s equality in power, which affected the patriarchal system that ruled the social life at that time. Since Jane Eyre is the first literary female character with a strong rebellious spirit in the history of English literature, as soon as the novel appeared, it became a banner for feminist writers to call on women to pursue equality and freedom.

In The Madwoman in the Attic, American famous feminist Sandra Gilbert critics explained the relationship between Bertha and Jane Eyre from the perspectives of feminism and psychology and considered that Bertha’s irrational behavior was the release of repressed psychology in the patriarchal society. In the meantime, feminist writer Elaine Showalter also agreed with the viewpoint from the angle of psychoanalysis and thought that Mesa was another self of Jane Eyre and the expression of Jane Eyre’s double personality who showed the hidden, angry and crazy side of Jane Eyre. They were both females oppressed by men. However, it is also considered in foreign critics circle that Jane Eyre could not be deemed as a feminist novel. According to Robert Martin, Jane Eyre was not a feminist fiction, but a religious novel which involved the significance of religion to men, for novel mentions that females should not be confined to housework, which could only be regarded as cognition of the nature of women’s temperament, but couldn’t serve as an embodiment of the equality of labor division. From the perspective of psychoanalysis, Jean Wyatt raised questions about the role of the novel in motivating women to pursue progress. She considered that although the novel satisfied females’ will to pursue self-esteem, the romantic ending of Jane Eyre and Rochester was actually a result of Electra complex, which was unhealthy psychology.

Similar to foreign comments, domestic literary critics also have controversies in the novel. At first, the image of Jane Eyre was regarded as an example of females’ spirit of not being insulted, seeking equality and fighting for the dignity of women. Wang Wenhui interpreted Jane Eyre from a feminist perspective, arguing that the work revealed the tragedy of women’s being oppressed and natural resources being plundered by men in the Victorian era and expressed the author’s ideals of liberating women and nature, developing females’ self-consciousness and establishing a world of gender equality. But then, there were comments saying that there were flaws in Jane Eyre which was not a powerful weapon to condemn the male-dominant society. Lu Yuling pointed out through in-depth analysis of various details, languages and psychological descriptions in the novel that there were loopholes in shaping personal characters which could not be neglected and she believed that behind Jane Eyre’s strong character, there was still inferiority psychology and obedience and compromise to the patriarchal society, which was the failure of Jane Eyre, the “woman pioneer”. 

Unlike foreign writers who evaluated the radiance of the novel from multiple perspectives such as literature, politics and history, domestic writers appraised the novel from literary perspective Therefore, the domestic literary circle still needs to further explore the novel’s themes from multiple perspectives and deeply analyze character personalities, so as to fully highlight the artistic tension and enable it to disseminate lasting artistic charm.

Nowadays, researchers analyze personality and causes of Jane Eyre from each aspect. The current research direction main includes:

1. Character traits and specific performance of Jane Eyre:

1) Strong sense of independence; struggle for their survival right and personality independence.

2) Challenge the unfair society and contend for equality and freedom.

3) Yearn for the love with the same interest and pursue for the equal and happy life.

4) Value dignity and embody her self-abasement for self-condition. 

2. The image of Jane Eyre expresses the abundant women’s emancipation, including: 

1) Advanced view of marriage. She thinks that marriage should be based on love, instead of treasure and status. 

2) Independent thought. She always requires for earning her own living. 

3) Jane Eyre is ordinary, but owns the abundant soul. Such description emphasizes importance of women’s inherent beauty, which has the educational significance on recognizing women’s value. 

3. Love between Jane Eyre and Rochester: this is one of main plots in the literature. The researcher thinks that this plot enables the author to deepen character traits of Jane Eyre to stand out her simple emotions in personal happiness. Jane Eyre’s love for Rochester reveals that a new woman in awakening of the lower class how to strive for economic independence and moral pureness, while revolting to social oppression and prejudice.
