 In the 1960s and 1970s, the feminist movement was developing rapidly, and the most representative movement features were the criticism of male chauvinism and the gradual awakening of female consciousness. With the progress of social and thoughts, women who have been imprisoned for thousands of years are gradually awakened in ignorance. Their sense of independence and autonomy is becoming stronger and stronger. They begin to pursue their independent personality, affirm their value and dignity and express their emotions.[2.]

The Thorn Bird was written in such a historical background. In this work, three generations of women of the Cleary family are living in different times and different environments, and they face fate and love with totally different characters. Through the analysis of these three generations of female images, it can be show that women at that time were exploring the contradictions, confusion and resistance in the pursuit of independent consciousness to break the shackles of thoughts. It is great significance to explore how women pursue the destiny of independence and independence.

Domestic research on female consciousness in Thorn Birds has also been quite a few, and most of them take love and religion as the main line. As Yin dan (2009) said: "They are not willing to be subservient to male humanity, the marriage they pursue is based on love, even if it costs them dearly." It shows in that particular era of The Thorn Birds, women have begun to actively pursue the independent consciousness of each retreat. This is not only reflected in the specific characters, but also the three women as a whole can show the trend of women's self-consciousness developing and growing towards maturity. [4.] Yang liulan (2012) also divided the three women into Fiona's pathetic misplaced love, Meggie's selfless and persistent love, and Justine's free and independent love. From these descriptions, the self-determination of these three women can also be fully demonstrated, until awakening. For three female images pursue the thorny road of love, Mao hui (2008) also analyzed the characteristics of these three generations of women in detail, showing that although they had different personalities, the road of life and the road of love were full of hardships. Their ending does not make us feel despair, because the last generation of Justine has a happy ending, making the unfulfilled wishes of the previous two generations of women become a reality.

In the history of western literature, there are many women who live for love just like the women in the Thorn Birds. As Simon de Beauvoir (1986a) said:"The first thing a woman must do is to abandon tradition in pain and pride.” In her book, she encourages contemporary women to break the shackles of tradition and seek intellectual, political and economic independence. As Simon de Beauvoir (1986b) also said:“Marriage is about connecting two complete individuals, not an addition, not a fallback, not an escape, or a remedy.” Under the influence of this trend of thought, western women began to boldly fight against social customs, moral codes and actively pursue men they love.

 According to Bulbeck (1997), three generations of women in thorn birds have different love concept from oriental women. First of all, they all have strong self-consciousness and actively pursue marriage based on the love. Secondly, they attach importance to the independence of personality, so they dare to fight against fate and seek what they insist on. Their search process is an important manifestation of women's consciousness development. Engels said: “Everyone pursues happiness and wants the external world and own existence, which is a kind of consciousness and emotion that human beings gather and settle down in the course of history.” The female image in the thorn birds has been pursuing happiness, which is based on certain pain. “They love in pain and grow in pain” ，such growth is the growth of female consciousness.

In sum, the research content of this paper can be divided into four parts: The first part mainly introduces the author's life experience, the creation background of thorn birds, the status and influence of the works and the awakening and development of female consciousness. The second part mainly expounds the development of three women's independent consciousness in the work. The third part reveals the causes of this development by combining the self-consciousness development of the three women in bramble birds. In the last part, the author summarizes the theme and significance of this paper.
