With the acceleration of globalization and the rapid growth of trade with other countries in the world, more and more foreign visitors have come to Hangzhou, creating unprecedented conditions for the development of local tourism in Hangzhou. 

As a result, tourism translation has drew more and more attention.

   A total of 1172 journal articles were found through the key words tourism translation on CNKI. These studies involve different areas of tourism, such as description of tourism spots, tourism advertisements, tour guide manuals and introduction of special local food. However, there are few studies about tourism handicrafts. 

Chinese traditional crafts affecting all aspects of social life, have a long history, various kinds, and rich scientific and cultural connotations. Many crafts and technologies have played an irreplaceable role in the historical development of China and even the world. The modern value of traditional technology cannot be ignored. Strengthening the external publicity of traditional crafts will help to develop traditional crafts, preserve excellent culture and deepen the world's understanding of Chinese traditional culture.

The Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion bases itself on new concepts and “intangibleness” and exists as the first assembly of interactive teaching, intangible experience, workmanship, and folk shows. More than 30 masters of different skills, including national, provincial and municipal craft masters and intangible inheritors .

Here within this study, the writer takes some traditional handicrafts in Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion as an example to discuss the translation of traditional handicrafts in Hangzhou.

1 Overview of Tourism Arts and Handicrafts Descriptions 

According to the explanation of Longman Dictionary of English Language & Culture (2004), arts and handicrafts refer to the arts that are concerned with making ordinary things by hand, such as pottery, weaving, furniture-making. etc. 

Tourism handicrafts are traditional products made by hand, and usually they are bound with local culture, embodying specific local culture, functioning as souvenirs or collections. They have a local flavor as their material, workmanship or technology, as well as their cultural connotation are restricted to a certain area and a special group of people. Translator should pay attention to their nature of culture transmission.

2 Peter Newmark's translation theory

In 1988, Peter Newmark published the theory of Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation, providing an important reference for cross-cultural translation. Semantic Translation mainly used in expressive texts and Communicative Translation mainly used in informative and vocative texts theory, based on the text type of the source text, can strike a balance between original color and the target readers.

According to Newmark (2001)，semantic translation tries to present, as much as possible, the precise conceptual meaning of the source text, to focus on the source text and the original author, and to preserve the cultural and contextual meaning of the source text.

Semantic translation improves on the basis of literal translation and faithful translation, and strives to maintain the form and content of the original text, so it tends to be complex and contains more meanings in the search for more specific expressions.

Firstly, Literal translation follows the syntactic structure of the source language but is out of context, while semantic translation sometimes has to explain or even clarify something that reader cannot understand. Secondly, compared with faithful translation, semantic translation pays more attention to the meaning of the original text rather than aesthetic value, so words or complex sentences can be omitted. In this sense, semantic translation is more flexible than faithful translation.

Here within this study, the author mainly adopts Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation theory to preserve the characteristics of Chinese culture and convey the information to the readers more accurately and effectively.
