（一）Previous Studies at home

Film is a way people use to explore another culture. British film, as an ingredient of the entire film industry, has been attached with great attention by scholars both at home and abroad. In this part, the author will present an analysis about the previous studies about British films both at home and abroad. 

Studies about British films at home are quite scattered and diversified. The first topic is about features of British films. According to Chen Xuguang (2007), British films have following features. Firstly, it is closely intertwined with literature works. As what is known to all, there are many great writers in UK, including Shakespeare, whose works have been taken as the classic and have been read by generations of readers. Many of the literature works have been adapted into films later. Secondly, most of the British films reflect the hierarchy culture in UK. Although hierarchy societies have been toppled down for long, hierarchy culture actually has already penetrated every walk of life. British films are also influenced by the hierarchy culture. Taking the Jane Eyre, which is a masterpiece in British films, as the example, Jane Eyre serves as a maid at the Edward’s house and was looked down upon by him in the first place. This reflects that British films indeed reflects the hierarchy culture in UK. Apart from the features of British films, some scholars also made studies on the artistic feature of British films. Chen Yutong (1983) promoted that British films have implicit beauty. According to him, there are two major reasons leading to such phenomenon. Firstly, British culture focuses on politeness quite a lot. In other words, being straightforward, which is taken as rudeness, is not promoted in British culture. That’s why British people are so implicit when they speak. English film, therefore, is not an exception. The third topic most scholars made studies on is the development of English film industry. According to Zhao Yu (2012), the last twenty years have witnessed the rapid development of the British films. He gave an assumption about the development trend of the British films. According to him, as films co-produced by American companies and British companies are getting increasingly popular. Therefore, this might be the development rend of the British film industry. 

（二）Previous Studies Abroad

Scholars abroad also made abundant researches about British film industry. Their studies are summarized as follows. Different from the studies made at home, studies made by foreign scholars are more systematic. Foreign scholars tend to focus on a specific topic and then make a thorough investigation. Scholars abroad conduct their researches on the economic influence of the British films. According to British Film Institute (2016), British film played a positive role in boosting the economy. Taking the Skyfall as the example, up to January 20th, 2013, this film kept the record of the top one wining the most box office in UK. The gross box office value is up to 102 million pounds. Though it can not boost the economy thoroughly, it indeed brought great positive impact on the national economy. Apart from Skyfall, British Film Institute also mentioned another three films whose gross box value has exceeded 50 million pounds. These three films are The Dark Knight Rises, Marvel Avengers Assemble and The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey. Apart from the box office, the investment the British film industry attracts also stimulates the growth of the economy. As what is known to all, investment is of great importance in the film industry. Whether it is the employing of the top level film stars or the setting of the film plot, it costs considerable amount of money, which most of it comes from investment. Therefore, film making can be taken as an opportunity to attract foreign capitals and hence also a chance to boost the economy, not boosting it that dramatically though. Besides, film industry itself will increase the employment, creating more job opportunities. For example, a lot of dubbing specialists will be employed during the post-editing period. This for sure will creates more job opportunities and hence stimulate the economic growth. 

From the above analysis, it can be seen that as an ingredient of the entire film industry, British film industry indeed is worth to be studied on as an academic topic. Generally speaking, Chinese scholars tend to attach more focus on the content of the film while scholars abroad focus more on the economic impact of the British film industry. According to Chinese scholars, British films have strong literature foundation. This is because UK has many great writers. Film industry, which is closely connected with literature, therefore, has been influenced by the literature work greatly. Besides, British films also have unique artistic features, taking implicit beauty of British films as an example. This is because British people like to be very euphemistic when they speak. Being straightforward is taken as an impolite behavior. Therefore, British literature works and also the British films are quite implicit.
