I．Literature Review

The view of love is the fundamental view and attitude of people to the problem of love. Love view in different historical periods, due to different economic conditions, the influence and restriction of the social system and ideology and culture state, different content, and with the development of society and continuous development and change.

Brontё Charlotte (1994)under the pen of Jane Eyre is not a small woman, but there is a strong self-esteem, she unswervingly pursuit, and bright, holy, beautiful life. Jane from the child grow into a mature and intelligent woman, her thoughts gradually mature. No matter what class in the face of what kind of person are to be neither humble nor pushy. Jane lives in a from parents, living environment, but also by the cousins. My aunt insulted undisguised contempt. To the boarding school, but also love the teacher injustice.     Jane and Shirley are intelligent and honest. Though one is plain-featured and the other pretty, both of them rich in minds. They are brave and independent. Jane is forced to contend with oppression, inequality, and hardship. Shirley does not satisfy with the rich life. Although Jane meets with a series of individuals who threaten her autonomy, Jane repeatedly succeeds at asserting herself and maintains her principles of justice, human dignity, and morality. Also Shirley keeps on contending with convention. In addition, they both values intellectual and emotional fulfillment. Jane’s strong belief in gender and social equality challenges the Victorian prejudices against women and the poor. And Shirley also has the same belief and struggles for equality of sexes and social classes.

   Why should I choose this as my treatise,“While Bronte’s greatest success is the result of such self-retreat, her heroines’ achievements are the balance they strike between their needs for autonomy and their desires to be an active member of society.”(Brian Phillips, 2003)So through the comparison, it can be found that Bronte’s theme of the novels is women need to be independent, self-esteem and pursue the happy their own. As Bronte said in the end of Shirley, “The story is told. I think I now see the judicious reader putting on his spectacles to look for the moral. It would be an insult to his sagacity to offer directions. I only say, God speed him in the quest.”(Shirley, 1993)Not only women like Jane Eyre and Shirley need to keep their beliefs to pursue their aims, but also all of people need have a goal to fulfill.
