Domestic research status

Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby" tell us the protagonist Gatsby romantic, tragic, full of dramatic color of life, reflected in the vanity of pleasure, confusion loss of the Jazz Age. In the novel, the author heavy use of symbolism to express its profound artistic ideas and themes. Heavy use of symbolism, not only enriched the connotation of the article, more profoundly reveals the theme. It reflects the author's mature artistic skills.

Xu Guiting, He mentioned thinking about the symbolism.At first,Art is the symbol of the beginning.Thus symbol is the earliest form of art. Hegel said, "'symbolic' both in terms of its concept, it still would order it appears in history, it is the beginning of art." Generally, there are two states symbolism.One state is as a specific mode of expression or idea, with specific things symbolize certain mood or attitude, mostly local, this state can be seen at various times in various literary genres.

"The Great Gatsby" was since translated into Chinese, also won favorite readers.Domestic scholars study this work, although only two or three decades, but research is also very extensive and multifaceted. Compared to other works,domestic scholars’ eyes mainly close to the novel itself. Such as the art of fiction, narrative point of view, symbolic significance.

Li Xi published the article "On The Great Gatsby "in describing the role of color in the characterization. He put characters and color description combining analyzes in the novel. He makes the novel's symbolic links to the characters themselves. And he noted author character and destiny from factors such as the use of different colors to symbolize. Auther use the color On the clever, and he strengthened the personalities of the artistic, deepened the theme(Li Xi, 2002: 79-83).

Wan Lianzeng combine the definition of American culture under the colors, have published "" The Great Gatsby "in green and cultural connotation Interpretation" and "" The Great Gatsby "in the gray connotation and culture analysis ".He detailed analysis of the green and gray of the two symbolic color. He stressed that the two colors of the special significance of the story.(Wan Lianzeng, 2012: 29 -31,67- 70).   

（二）Foreign research status 

The Great Gatsby has been thought highly of as one of the greatest books in the history of American literature.Since its publication, it has drawn many people’s attention, and they write a lot of critical essays about it.

Before the release of The Great Gatsby, some scholars sharply criticized Fitzgerald for his lack of objectivity and immaturity in structure in most of his early works. But when The Great Gatsby was published in 1925, the views of the critics were changed. According to Cooperman (1996), The Great Gatsby achieved “objectivity” by means of “let the book say what it has to say without intrusive explication and ‘stay out of the book.’” 

Having read The Great Gatsby three times, T.S. Eliot praised that it was “the first 

step that American fiction has taken since Henry James” (Donaldson, 1984, p. 268). And Tony Tanner considered the novel to be “the most perfectly crafted work of fiction to have come out of America.” 

Susan Resneck Parr thought that in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald attached  great importance to the detail of the structure, and made a creative connection between  the past and the present life.  George Garrett, in his Fire and Freshness, spoke highly of The Great Gatsby  or Master of Arts Thesis its language style, including special dialogues and monologues in his Fire and Freshness. 

The Great Gatsby also made the novel criticized by some people. H.L. Mencken is one of them. In his eyes, The Great Gatsby did not follow the traditional writing style, and Gatsby, the major character of the novel was too vague to be a literary protagonist.

In this paper, Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby provides a brief introduction. It pointed out that the use of symbol in The Great Gatsby. It analyzes symbolic use in three colors.They are the green, yellow and white. Finally, it proposed the conclusion and summarize the full text.
