With the rapid development of globalization, the connection between China and other country is becoming closer and closer in politics, economy, science, technology, culture and sport. It is essential to master the English language which is one of the languages of the world. But there have some problems exist in the nowadays Chinese primary school teaching. As Suling Liu’s opinion, there are three problems exist. Firstly, professional teacher is not enough. Secondly, teaching methods are too monotonous and lack of flexible. Finally, it is lack of communication between students and teachers. And Yan Yang and Xiping Yang thought that there is a situation exist in today’s Chinese English education, that is when teaching in class, teachers are mainly focus on grammar, words and pay less attention to student’s actual needs. And that leads to that even though students are learning English in school from primary school to University; they can’t master it and use it fluently.
In order to solve these problems, we should pay attention to the Basic English teaching of primary school. First of all, we should concern the mental characteristic of primary school students. According to children's research, childhood is the primary stage of the development of human being's view of life, world view and values. It is also an important stage of developing thinking ability and forming cognitive style. From Dianjian Wang and Hongling Lai’s point of view, in this stage, the development of children has great deformability. The influence on foreign language learning is mainly manifested in children's interest in foreign languages as long as they are properly guided by parents or teachers. And also they have great stimulated ability when they learn language and their memory ability is stronger than adult and they can memory things easier. Finally they have less psychological burden because their purpose for learning English is simple, such as not for exam.
Teachers can grasp the mental characteristic of primary schools; teach them with the four Principles. First of all, teaching with the principle of interest. As we all know, interest is the best teacher of all. It can inspire student to learn. Secondly, teaching with the principle of communicating. Language learning’s final purpose is to communicate with others. And learning language is a interact process. Thirdly, teaching with the principle of situation language learning. The upper status of language applying is to use it as in the real situation. Finally, teaching with the principle of enduring error. It will make students felt safety if teachers does not pay attention to the error strictly and they can take part in the learning actively.
Teachers can apply these four methods when teaching oral English for primary school students. The first one is teaching them the basic conversation sentence. Students can start from phrase and short sentences and when practice some conversation English, class English and simple question. Second one is do a activity for information gap. Teacher can utilize many form of activity, such as picture, personal information card, chart or story etc. to have a communication between student and teacher or student to student. Third one is teacher can have some game part to let students to practice and strengthen when they learn. Last one is do a survey for classmates with some familiar topic.
In sum, the purpose of English Teaching in primary school is to stimulate students' interest in English learning, cultivate their positive attitude towards learning English, so that they can establish confidence in learning English. It is necessary to enhance students' oral communication awareness, cultivate and improve students' oral communicative capacity, let students "dare to speak" English, "can speak" English, and "speak" English.
