The American western fiction is a cultural phenomenon formed in the process of American Westward movement which is the biggest movement in American history. Therefore, it is a peculiar and the most Americanized literature result. However, it is not kept a more watchful eye by the critics since it comes into the world. It is classified as the “sub-culture” and popular literature which is public, folk and isn’t valued by the scholars. It belongs to neither the mainstream culture with a lot of attention at all times nor marginal culture which is rising gradually and the critics attach increasingly importance to. 

The thesis attempts to give a fresh interpretation of the American western fiction in new research circumstance. The author of the thesis discovers through doing some reading that there exists an important relationship between the American individualism as the very core of American culture and the American western fiction, that is, the heroic images in the American western fiction are shaped because of the impacts of American individualism. The thesis combines them by using the word “hero” and adopts the method of cultural studies to analyze the American western fiction. Not many papers in the past were written by applying my approach to the study of the American western fiction, which is quite important to understanding American culture and history about Westward movement and American individualism value, few critics also attached importance to the researches on the American western fiction from my point of view. At the same time, promoting the place of the American western fiction in American literature through researching it is the tendency in the research field.

Cooper's "the last a heavily do people" and irving west of the Virginia man "was chosen for this paper analysis of object. And this is just the two works are in the development of the west movement there, climax and end. So from a standpoint, according to the text of the historic ", each work shows the different stages of the development of the west movement of the different historical background and images. On the other hand, see, according to "history text illustration" both works and have some similarities, such as capitalist ideology and capitalism of the yield, etc. History text help us a thorough reading literary text, and literary text also reflects the historical text did not reflect some of the historical facts. Finally, based on the analysis of the two works more, also can see the westward movement of the formation of the national character of American influence, such as independence, good human and culture development.

This paper will into motion is west of background, through the application of the new historical principle and relevant knowledge of the above mentioned two text carries on the analysis comparison, and through the analysis result of the westward movement the influence of national model body, improve the status of the novel in the western United States and more profound understanding of it. And to further understand the core of American culture and the history of west movement and its effect on America.
