There are many scholars at home and abroad concentrating on Morrison’s novels. As for the study of her novel, Love, foreign scholars have studied from various perspectives. For instance, James Mellard researches the postmodern crisis appearing in the novel, and explores how the paternal authority influences the father in the family who serves most importantly as an obstacle to the relationship of two heroines, i.e. Heed and Christine. In view of Jean Wyatt, the characters’ severance from their past is a personal, not a world historical event, an individual rather than a collective trauma. Heed is catapulted untimely into the world of adult sexuality and marriage prematurely, which causes she loses the ability to order their lives fruitfully in relation to time’s passage. 

In China, after Toni Morrison wins the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993, there appear lots of translations of her novels in China, and it brings a burst of research hot about Toni Morrison. For instance, Wang Shouren and Wu Xinyun, begin to study on Morrison’s work systematically. They analyze the novels from different angles with feminism and post colonialism theory. When Love was published in the country, it immediately caught scholars’ attention. Pan Wenjiao interprets the sisterhood between the women characters in this novel. And she thinks that the black women are oppressed by patriarchy, and they need to keep together to find their own values by the sisterhood. Wei Huixian also thinks that the root of threatening women’s self-empowerment comes from patriarchal system. And she uses the female gothic theory to analyze this novel. She appreciates women who are brave and fearless in this novel on the road to seeking self-empowerment.

These scholars and critics have made comprehensive studies. Most of them focus on the theme. They study on the sisterhood among these female characters. Also many scholars study on writing techniques of her novels. Of course, there are many scholars analyze the novel from the perspective of feminism, but it is inevitable to ignore some points. This paper intends to discuss the oppression that women suffer from patriarchy, but more comprehensively from the political, economic and educational perspective and their psychological trauma under patriarchal system, so as to gain a better understanding of the novel.
