The purpose and significance of this research

Hemingway's masterpiece "the old man and the sea" is the Pearl of the Nobel literature prize. Describes an old man in the great sea of hard work, and constantly fight with the natural and shark. All the time, Santiago was interpreted by many authors as "tough hero". But the writer from another point of view, that is why so good of a person, through perseverance, indomitable struggle still fails to get to the fact that by analysis on the character and the social environment analysis, dig deep reasons for such a tragedy and self-reflection. Only in depth understanding of the meaning of the tragedy and the reasons for the occurrence, to better reflect on their own, thinking about life and value, and self-realization.

The present and basic situation of the research at home and abroad

The old man and the sea since the date of birth, is become the focus of domestic and foreign readers and critics study. In the 2000 years ago the half a century, readers are  more attention to the works in the tough guy image of nihilism, tragedy consciousness and the iceberg theory and so on, research results were very rich. Since the beginning of the new century, the old man and the sea is still academic research center. Research viewpoint mainly concentrated in the ecological criticism, art form, gender role and so on several aspects, and the iceberg theory, tough guy image, symbol function, tragedy implication of the study are both heavy and beyond, so harvest and defects coexist.

The study of Hemingway in China began in the thirty's. The first publication of Hemingway's comments was Huang Yuan, who pointed out the realistic characteristics of Hemingway's creative method in his 1933 article. As a result of the special time and experience of Hemingway's life, he created his own style of writing. For a long time, the Santiago of Hemingway, he was seen as an unyielding soul, the hero of the hero. Such as GUI Yan Chen (2012); cold Ling Yu (2012) are analyzed emphatically in San Diego this tough hero, no matter what kind of difficulties encountered, they are reflected in the extraordinary personality charm and vitality. But there are also a few writers from another point of view, that is, from the sense of tragedy, such as Fan Ming Yan (2011), the main research of this work in the tragic consciousness and tragic color. Various scholars from all walks of life have made a lot of analysis on this character from different angles, but did not make a thorough study on the theme of the old man who did not get anything after all. At the same time, if today, whether Santiago can adapt to China's workplace society, whether the outcome will not be the same. As the theme did not do in-depth discussion. Based on this, this paper tries to analyze from this angle, give people the inspiration.
