Abstract

Between 1865 and 1914 in the United States，Literature is called realism in the history of American literature. American Literature in this period was the manifestation of American spirit, especially American novels. Realism is a reaction to romanticism. Face reality, not dream. Realistic literature paved the way for modernist literature. 

The three representative writers of this period were Howells, Henry James and Mark Twain.
