On pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication---开题报告

   In cross-cultural communications, people suffers from the communication failures because of the culture difference.Objectively speaking, the cross-cultural business communication refers to the communication between people.Then language and culture are involved in cross-cultural communication closely.The discussion can be much more better to begin with the definitions of culture awareness and communication style before understanding the cross-cultural business communication from marketing science and culture science in different fields.As the carrier of culture,language highly affects the way in which speakers communicate with each other.Miller claims in his book Communications: “Language and Meaning the most of our misunderstanding sof other people are not due to any inability to hear them or to parse sentences or to understand their words.A far more important source of difficulty in communication is that we so often fail to understand a speaker’s intention.”(Miller,1974:12)

   Many researchers in studying the pragmatics have paid more attention to pragmatic failures om the process of communication.Thomas first defined it and her definition of pragmatic failure is one of the  milestones in the history of pragmatics research.She though that the study of pragmatic failure is an area from the perspective of cultural difference.She suggests “pragmatic failure is an area of cross-cultural communication breakdown.”(Thomas,1983:91)and maintains that the cultural mismatches cause the sociopragmatic failure. Second language acauisition is another aspect which can cause the pragmatic failures during the business communication.Negative tranafer the two different pragmatic transfers identified by Kasper and Blum-Kulka(Kasper and Blum-Kulka,1992:12-14).The term of transfer means that present learning is affected by the past learning.The similarities and differences between the foreign language and the native language that has already been acquired is a troubled influence.

Since the 1980s.a lot of domestic scholars cast great interest on this topic.And based-on Thomas’ theoretical framework, they have done many researches from the ;cross-cultural perspective.They think that cultural differences can cause the cross- cultural pragmatic failures.Because people who hold the different cultural backgrounds have different systems of value,communicative styles and understanding patterns, it is very likely that pragmatic failures are caused in the course of cross-cultural communications.
