Learing English idioms and proverbs,which was published in the Journal of PLA institue of foreign languages by FungChuiWa in 1978,was earliest article of the domestic research of English idioms wringting.Since then,many scholars devoted themselves to the study of idioms and proberbs.But this time’s studies just limited in the basic charateristics of idioms and proberbs and their translation skills discussion.

L.P.Smith’s book Words and Ldioms(1925),is an exposition of what language idiosyncrasies or peculiarities tell us about the usage of idioms in English.Smith pays more attention to structural peculiarities and idiomatic tranagessions than to the semantics of idioms.To him,idioms are essentially those forms peculiar to a language,whether they are literal or not.

A language is the cultural carrier, and idioms and proverbs are the essence of the language. The translation of English idioms and proverbs can influence the quality of the version. So this paper showed that we should learn about the  features of  idioms, command the  basic techniques for the English idioms and proverbs translation, and focus on the  problems emerging during the translation so that we can obtain the high quality translations.
