纽马克翻译理论探究-以《面纱》译本为例开题报告

Research Status:

Peter Newmark is one of the most famous translation theorists and educators in contemporary Britain. The core of his translation theory is semantic translation and communicative translation. In the 1990s, he put forward the "related translation method", which indicated that his translation theory was gradually becoming systematic and perfect. Meanwhile he became the representative of the second largest translation school in the Western translation field after Nida. A Testhook of  Translatiom, published by Newmark in the late 1990s, sets out from the perspective of linguistics and on the basis of analyzing and summarizing all kinds of translation thoughts, which systematically and brilliantly expounds his own translation views and methodology. Newmark's translation theory is more scientific than the traditional translation theory by emphasizing the commonness of language and highlighting the translation function. In addition, starting from the communicative function of language, he proposed that "translation is a kind of interest", which quite creatively highlighted the translator's initiative in translation and allowed the existence of several translations for a work, breaking the traditional translation standard of "one size fits all ". With the development of globalization, translation plays a significant role in cultural integration and communication. Literary translation is one of the most popular and influential genres. Many foreign classics have been translated into Chinese and are very popular among Chinese readers. In this report, the author aims to explore Newmark's translation theory guidance in Literary translation. Hope it will be useful for the development of literary translation. 

Achievements:

After 30 year’s debate and research, all schools of thought have shifted their attention from the form of information to the content of information and the response of readers when exploring the equivalence of translation. Even though there are different proposition, such as "Equivalence in different linguistic phenomena", "equivalence in writing" or "dynamic equivalence" and "pragmatic equivalence", they all focus on the function of language rather than its formal features. 

Newmark proposed "semantic translation" and "communicative translation", which solved the long-standing debate about "literal translation" and "free translation" in the translation field. Inspired all translators' mind and explored new methods in translation research and practice. Based on the text classification model proposed by the German psychologist Buhler and German functionalist translation theorists Royce, Newmark came up with a new classification model after analyzing multiple source text classification problem, and characterized various types of text in a detailed definition with corresponding translation strategies. He emphasizes the selection of appropriate translation strategies according to different text types, which are of guiding significance to the translation of novels and other literary works.
