Literature Review

The mainstream linguistics study focused on syntax in 20th century, and people seldom paid attention to vocabulary research which in fact became the vassal of grammar. However, at the beginning of this century, in western especially in Europe, there are several lexicology masterpieces came out one after another: Behrens, 2002; Cruse, 2005; Wunderlich, 2006; Halliday, 2007; Hanks, 2008. Lexicology then gradually gained the important status in linguistics in the west. A Polish scholar, Anna Wierzbicka, even thought that syntax was no more than the glue that was used to paste words together (Yang Bin, 2008:1). Jespersen in 1938 once said that the whole English language history from some perspectives was the chain consisted by loanwords. Sapir also said in 1921 that language just like culture, was seldom self-sufficient. In fact, more than eighty percent of the words in English come from other languages, some of which come from Chinese.

The studies at home

The study of Chinese Loanwords in English has been popular among Chinese recently. Many researchers have published papers and articles concerning this topic.    For example Professor Chen Shengli has studied the amount of Chinese borrowing words in Oxford English Dictionary. And Professor Zhang Xinliang has studies the features of Chinese loanwords in English in 2008. Professor Yang Yingchun, in 2011, has discussed the culture factor about Chinese borrowings. Tu Chaolian, has studied the Chinese loanwords’ linguistic factors in 2013, which mainly talked about the phonetic features and changes during the process of borrowing. And it is the lexicologist, Professor Wang Rongpei, who together with Chang Junyue has published the thesis The Origin of Chinese Borrowings in English in 2001 which was a masterpiece in this field.

The studies abroad

The study of Chinese loanwords in English has about eighty years’ history. People generally think it is the English history expert, Serjeantson who wrote the book A History of Foreign Words in English that began the study of Chinese borrowings in English. Regarding thesis, American G Cannon has done the biggest contribution to this study. He has spent many years in collecting the Chinese loanwords in English, and has published Chinese Borrowings in English. According to 8 English dictionaries, he elaborated the forms, meanings, origins, classifications of the 979 Chinese borrowings in English. Global Times once reported that English has absorbed some 20000 new words, among which contains 4000 Chinese words. Chinese has become the biggest source of English new words.
