Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) is an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he becomes one of London’s most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. He is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, as well as the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. He is an important representative of the Aesthetic Movement of the late Victoria period. From Wikipedia, Aestheticism (also the Aesthetic Movement) is an intellectual and art movement supporting the emphasis of aesthetic values more than social-political themes for literature, fine art, music and other arts. It was particularly prominent in Europe during the 19th century, but contemporary critics are also associated with the movement. 

YL Zhang （2015）This paper starts from one of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales: The Nightingale and the Rose to reveal the writer's aesthetics by exploring into the imagery and diction of the story. Oscar Wilde has left us the precious art quintessence by means of his works.

SK Mugair（2016）Oscar Wilde's fairy story The Nightingale and the Rose, During this fairy tale, Oscar Wilde uses various stylistic devices for the interpretation of aesthetic and artistic notions. His manipulation and careful choice of words make his language rich, and his penchant for innovative expression and syntax makes his style unique. All the stylistic devices which are used by Hemingway in his literary works create cohesion and coherence. This research mainly showcases an overview of stylistics based on Xu Youzhi's book English Stylistics and gives a brief introduction of Oscar Wilde and some knowledge on The Nightingale and the Rose. Moreover, with the references to stylistic theory, a comprehensive stylistic analysis of the tale in lexical, syntactic, semantic, phonetic and contextual features will be presented. Lastly, this paper will tend to give a brief statement of summarizing the stylistic features, which assist Oscar Wilde create a story that successfully absorbs and shocks whoever reads it.

A Hariyanto （2013）This study tries to explain the lexical cohesion analysis on Oscar Wilde Short Story  The Nightingale and the Rose. It concerns with lexical cohesive devicesthat are found in the short story and finds out whether the lexical cohesive devicescan make the text coherent and unified. This thesis uses library research by reading some books in the library to findout concepts that are relevant to the theoritical review of the thesis. The data of thisstudy are collected from a written text. The data are qualitative that are in the form ofdescription documentary (bibliographical) study is applied to this study whichdescribes lexical cohesive devices, such as repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym,cohyponym, meronym, comeronym, and collocation. Analyzing and discussing the short story The Nightingale and The rose can beconcluded that the application of lexical cohesive devices makes the text coherent andunified. The repetition plays an important role in making the text coherent and unifiedbecause it helps the readers understand the short story The Nightingale and The Rose.

JH Zheng（2007）In order to help readers better understand the life and works of Lin Huiyin,this paper gives a brief introduction to her Chinese version of Oscar Wilde's "The Nightingale and the Rose",analyzing its significance in the history of translating foreign literary works into Chinese,its linguistic features,its tendency of domestication and its shortcomings like misinterpretation.

The Nightingale and the Rose is mainly about a nightingale who overhears a young student complaining that his professor’s daughter will not dance with him in the party, as he is unable to give her a beautiful red rose. In order to help the poor young student, the kind nightingale visits all the rose trees in the garden. Sadly, there is no red rose in the cold winter time. However, one of the rose trees tells her there is a way to produce a red rose, but only if the nightingale is prepared to sing the sweetest song for the rose tree all night with her heart pressing into a sharp thorn, sacrificing her life. Seeing the student in sorrowful tears, and valuing his human life above her bird life, the nightingale carries out the ritual. She sings the songs about love all night and impales herself on the rose-tree’s sharp thorn so that her heart’s blood can stain the rose. Then, the student takes the rose to the professor’s daughter, but she again rejects him, because another man has sent her some real jewels and says “everybody knows that jewels cost far more than flowers.” In the end of the story, the young student angrily throws the rose into the gutter on the road, returns to his study of metaphysics, and decides not to believe in true love anymore.

Through The Nightingale and the Rose, Wilde’s aesthetic ideology can be seen clearly. This paper is written to find out Wilde’s aesthetic ideology in this fairy tale as well as the influences and practical significance on the society. In the following paragraphs, Aestheticism will be analyzed from the aspects of rhetoric and imagery, to reveal how Wilde’s aesthetic ideology is embodied in this fairy tale.
