I Literature Review

      Nowadays, the mainstream ideologies of USA and European countries can represent the mainstream values of the whole world. In terms of USA, individualism is praised highly and people are always seeking for liberty, equality and democracy. Movies, as an important form of cultural representation, contain a variety of elements on humanism, politics and economy. American movies are profoundly influenced by American culture, so that individual heroism is much embodied in them. Unquestionably, American movies are glary in the arts of movie all over the world. And among the branches, the science fiction movies are of great importance. They are categorized into soft science fiction movies and hard science fiction movies according to the influence of scientific theories on the plot. The former emphasizes the supernatural power of protagonists, while the latter is on a firm foundation of subjects like physics, with the exploration and interpretation of nature and humanity. Despite the differences, the two types of science fiction movies have the common core values which are demonstrated through justice-maintaining, human-rescuing, sacrifice-based individualism and heroism.

     After referring to a large number of journals and reviewing the literature of our country in recent years, the author has found the following points about American science fiction movies. 

     The heroism in American science fiction movies is the integration of unrestrained imagination, defense against the evil, protection for the helpless, and individual striving. The heroes/heroines might be ordinary people in the beginning and suffering from various obstacles, but they never give up. In the end, they stand up again and overcome all difficulties. Such heroism is a representation of the spirit of USA, which is closely related to the history and social development of the country. With the most advanced technologies and the influential output of movie culture, the science fiction movies is certainly the best combination of the two advantages.

     The cultural connotations and cores of USA can be partly observed through the research on the heroism in American science fiction movies. Having started later than European countries and USA, Chinese movies can learn from them in aspects of photographic methods & skills, arts and cultural representations. Likewise, there is heroism in Chinese movies so the differences in heroism between Chinese movies and western movies can be studied through the present research.
